Higher education student and staff mobility project
Start date: Jun 1, 2014, End date: Sep 30, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

Context The geographic location of the Conservatorio “Jacopo Tomadini” in Udine makes it naturally predisposed to international cooperation. In fact, Udine is situated in the outermost part of the north-east of Italy, on the borders with Austria and Slovenia and the bordering region called Alpe Adria. Thanks to this peculiarity, the educational and artistic activity of the Conservatory has always been characterised by a deeply cosmopolitan component. Objectives The main objectives of our Institute are: • to improve the excellence by perfecting the quality of the learning process and by promoting the best performances, through innovation and by reaching an European framework; • to contribute to ameliorate the quality, attractiveness and accessibility of the musical subjects offered by the Conservatory; • to spread the professionalism and to create advantageous and mutual partnerships able to provide chances to positive debate and growth together; • to experiment with new teaching and learning methods, to promote novelty and the advancement of new technologies; • to encourage new, personal and cultural experiences, to enhance language proficiency and the awareness that every student is an European citizen. Therefore, the relations and cooperations with the main European Academies of music have been invigorated, keeping in mind the student's learning-related needs and the preexisting professional relations with the professors. Currently, Tomadini can count on forty five partnerships, albeit their number is escalating from year to year. The qualitative objectives envisaged at the beginning of the project have been met. The recognition of credits has been fully applied for both the incoming and outgoing students alike. Participants During the academic year 2014/2015, thirteen students have gone to study abroad. In the previous year (2013/2014) the number of mobilities for studying purposes were six, hence we are facing a very clear result that shows how in just one year the requests for mobility have more then doubled. In the academic year 2014/2015, coherently with the previous one, the period of study favoured by the students was about six months. The reasons behind those mobilities have been academic in nature (about 60% of the cases), while other students (40%) experienced the study abroad as a training time to build a future career. The duration of the period abroad has generally been considered satisfactory, but in three cases a prolongation had been required. The Teaching Mobilities occurred from our Conservatory towards other countries have been eight, about the same as in previous years. Regarding incoming students, the Institute has counted two mobilities, while the professors coming from Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Czech Republic, etc. who held masterclasses as part of the Erasmus+ project have been numerous. Activities undertaken The undertaken activities have been mainly related to music production. Incoming teachers and students have been involved in concerts, both inside and outside the Institute. Concerning our outgoing students, they reported a good or excellent teaching quality found abroad. Results The students evaluated the experience gained as good or satisfactory by developing new intercultural relations and the reinforcement of musical and professionalizing skills, the reaching of personal independence and resourcefulness and the improvement in their language skills. Lastly, the students have expressed their open mindedness on looking for a job outside their country after the Erasmus experience and they also consider that their studies abroad might facilitate them in undertaking a future career. Future objectives The Institute plans to increase the appeal of Erasmus mobility to the students for traineeships carried out with the Consortium KTEU-ET, which is composed by the University of Udine, Trieste, Venice, the International School for Advanced Studies of Trieste (SISSA) and the Conservatory of Trieste. Among others objectives that the Conservatory would like to achieve there is to promote mobilities that could last one year instead of shorter ones because it's believed that annual mobility is a more significant experience both for the study that for life. The Institute is aiming also to encourage participation of the administrative staff to the Staff Mobilities, to obtain their effective involvement in the Erasmus framework, which could inspire them at assimilate useful insight, in order to improve our Conservatory's efficiency. Finally, the enlargement of the cooperations with other nations belonging to the Partner Countries is considered of the utmost importance. The goal is to obtain Inter Institutional Agreement with universities belonging to the United States of America, Cuba and Russia. This will allow the Tomadini Institute to open up to other fields of cooperation and experience other cultures, new research and teaching methods of great value and of certain innovation.
