Higher education student and staff mobility project
Start date: Jun 1, 2014, End date: Sep 30, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

The ERASMUS program has been a key tool in underpinning the International Cooperation strategy, recording a remarkable growth through the mobility of students, teachers and staff. The focus on internationalization continues to be one of the strategic axes for UTAD’s sustainability. Increasing the number and quality of exchange programs for student (studies and internships), teachers (education and training) and non-teaching staff (training) is a central and essential objective to promote multilateral cooperation among several higher education institutions, and to simultaneously stimulate the attractiveness of foreign student communities in advanced training programs in areas of knowledge with specific skills, by promoting a European and international dimension. For several years now, this program has been a clear investment on increasing UTAD’s internationalization levels and the quality of its actors. Among the general objectives of this application, we point out the increase in the number and quality of student, teacher and Staff mobility in UTAD, the evolution in quality multilateral cooperation with top European educational institutions, and the strengthening of the degree of transparency and compatibility between higher education qualifications. The ERASMUS KA1 Programme – Individual Mobility for Learning Purposes is a vehicle for the incentive to transnational and multilateral cooperation through the mobility of students, teachers and staff, including those who may have special educational needs. With regard to the contract of the previous year, the UTAD Project anticipated 177 mobilities in total distributed as follows: 120 study mobilities (SMS), 19 placements (SMP), 36 teacher mobilities (STA), and 2 staff mobilities (STT). We achieved our goals, exceeding this number by 34 mobilities for a total of 211 mobilities, and surpassing the total number of mobilities in the previous year of the project. The goals set to improve and increase both in qualitative and quantitative terms were achieved in all types of mobility (SMS, SMP, STT and STA). Dissemination and internal disclosure sessions in the university and the activities which took place (participation of former students in the sessions), as well as the carrying out of a contract signing day and the promotion of "Erasmus Day" served to leverage the program and allowed for greater involvement of the academy, namely of the degrees which in recent years mobilized in smaller numbers, such as Nursing and Engineering. External and internal dissemination through e-mail, a newsletter, advertising and direct contact had its results in promoting the program. Building Europe in a multi-cultural perspective and finding common European solutions to common European problems means to cooperate with persons, organizations and institutions in other Member States, learn from them and together develop new activities, practices and systems. We find it also pertinent to note that UTAD operates according to the principles of ECHE, respecting the promotion of equal opportunities, balance of flows between the sexes and support for students with special needs. We continue to develop actions in order to increase mobility numbers without forgetting the quality of mobility. To this end, we seek to develop initiatives that provide improved performance of teachers; to support innovative learning practices in different contexts; to apply and use ECTS and the Diploma Supplement; to expand the technical and cultural knowledge of students, teachers and staff; to promote free courses in language learning and other measures that could expand language skills (tutorials). Arranging information sessions at the level of ERASMUS + interlocutors, students and the community in general, to dispel obstacles to mobility, to apply a set of best practices to students who choose UTAD as the host institution (to be responsible for their social and cultural academic integration), thus contributing to quality learning throughout life and promoting high levels of performance, bestowing a higher scientific, social and cultural European awareness and strengthening social cohesion, active citizenship and intercultural dialogue.
