Higher education student and staff mobility project
Start date: Jun 1, 2014, End date: Sep 30, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

IES Pío Baroja’s strategic goal is to internationalize its academic activities focusing on practical trainings in different European countries. From the beginning, through informative talks, we try to motivate and encourage the Vocational Training students to participate. In the autumn of 2014 we started a selection process in which we evaluated students’ academic record, their language level (by means of a test carried out by the English Department), their maturity as well as their motivation through a personal interview conduced by the coordinator of the Erasmus Programme. We were assigned three internships for the Higher-level Vocational Training students. Ten students took part in the selection process; three of them were selected and granted the scholarship and another student was selected but not granted the economic aid. With the help of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Spain, two internship positions were offered in Pre-school Education centres in Ferrara (Italy), and another one in Physical Education in Perugia (Italy). These three internships were given to those students who obtained the scholarship. There was also a fourth student, from International Commerce, who received a non-paying internship from a company in Frankfurt (Germany). We carried out all the necessary paperwork, but the student nor the company gave us the documents that proved that the student had taken the internship. So, do to this incident we followed SEPIE (the Spanish Service for the Internationalisation of the Education) protocol and removed them from the Mobility Tool. We only have the documents we signed before the student took the internship, but we do not have the Erasmus certificate or the one that the Community of Madrid requires. We had to cancel the internship and decided to no longer collaborate with that company. The students count on our help for both the planning of their journey and the finding of accommodation in the different places. None of the three students had previous knowledge of the Italian language, so they had to take a basic course in order to facilitate their integration in the companies. The course took place in the facilities of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Madrid, and it served as a basis and complement to the online course that was offered by the OLS platform. Students valued and were thankful for the linguistic support they received, and stated that it was very helpful to them. The three students who went to Italy were very satisfied with their internship and, as they have told us, both from a personal and a professional point of view, they considered it a really rewarding experience. They also think that it will improve their employability and that it is an experience that every student should have. This project will continue throughout the following years. In fact, at the moment of writing this report, we were given five more internships for the students and two scholarships for staff training for the upcoming term. Our objective is to increase, year after year, the mobility for both students and staff members with the goal of improving our internationalisation.
