The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (UoA) for the academic year 2014-15 (first year of implementation of ERASMUS+) had set the goal of keeping its commitments, as they were presented at the Erasmus Policy Statement and according to its Strategy in general, decided by the authorities of the University and initiated by its Committee of International Relations and European Educational Programmes.
The quantitative goal was the conclusion of Interuniversity agreements with Institutions with which there was already a good cooperation in ERASMUS/LLP programme but also with new ones. This would lead to the participation of more students and staff of UoA in the programme and the reception of more students and staff from partner Universities. However, the period during which the new agreements were supposed to be concluded and the organisation of activities for the implementation of the new programme was about to be defined, coincided with a three month strike of the employees of UoA and after that the expulsion from work of a very large number of them (with the threat of their final dismissal) for 1,5 year. This fact was catastrophic for all activities of UoA and of course for ERASMUS+. There was a significant decrease of outgoing students for studies (200 students less than those of the precedent year) and there was no mobility of staff for training. The other mobility activities had a slight increase while the outgoing students for traineeship were many more than those of the precedent year.
Regarding the quality of the project, as a goal of the University, the effect of the reduction of employees, both in central administration and in the Faculties of UoA, was also a decisive factor. All necessary work was assigned to the employees left, the workload was difficult to deal with and consequently there were many problems and malfunctions in the implementation of the programme. In spite of this, there was a very big effort to keep the quality of the project to a good level and to respect all basic principles of the programme and this was accomplished, according to the final reports of the participants.
The results regarding the implementation of the project were positive and the degree of satisfaction of the participants was very high while the promotion of our University was significant, regardless of the problems that were faced. Many European Universities, as well as institutions from all over the world, are willing to cooperate with UoA and ask for the conclusion of ?nterinstitutional agreements, the number of which has now returned to the level acquired before the crisis.
