Higher education student and staff mobility project
Start date: Jun 1, 2014, End date: Sep 30, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

IES Domingo Pérez Minik is an educational center which imparts higher vocational training in computer science, located in the metropolitan area of the island of Tenerife (Canary Islands). Vocational training students should complete their training by performing placements at the end of the course, getting in many cases an employment offer in the host company. However, the Canary Islands are one of the Spanish regions hit hardest by the economic crisis of last years, finding our students employability problems due to the depression. Also, being an outermost region of the EU, companies in the computer industry settled on the islands do not have the resources and technological level comparable to other regions of the EU, that complement and enhance the training of students in this scope. For the latter reason, it has also been decided to promote in the center mobilities of teachers, especially with the intention of making "job-shadowing" in IT companies, in order to improve the technical knowledge of teachers and to meet production processes carried out in other countries, to give students an added value in these areas. For these reasons, IES Domingo Pérez Minik has decided to take part in the Erasmus+ program of the European Commission. Regarding the student profiles who participate in this type of mobility, we have on one hand system administrators: who are able to assembly and repair computers, implement and configure computer networks, install and manage any kind of software and operating systems, etc., and software developers: able to analyze, design and develop software applications for desktop and mobile devices, and to develop and exploit databases, among other capabilities. Despite the economic difficulties of the region and the difficult employment of our students, they are still reluctant to participate in this type of mobility to do their internship in another EU country , so the number of participants at our center is very low: just 1 student participated this year. Students often claim that the amount of the Erasmus grant is not sufficient to cover 100 % of the costs of accommodation and support in technologically interesting destinations without additional aid (savings, family support or other supplementary grant) . Similarly, language is another reason why the student refuses to participate in such projects. However , the experience of students in this call and in previous years has been very positive , getting students in many cases a job offer from the host company , or a letter of recommendation for other companies in the same sector in the zone. So, when participating students return from internship training before the end of the course, they expose to classmates and teachers their experiences and shows the technologies with which they have worked, giving ideas to teachers for future courses. Regarding the impact of the project in the center, it improves the employability of the participating students, not only by the possibility that they can get a job in the destination country, but because they improve their CV, both in level languages as in technological skills, very demanded by companies in the rapidly changing computer industry. Similarly, offer this type of mobility represents an attraction for prospective students.
