Higher education student and staff mobility project
Start date: Jun 1, 2014, End date: Sep 30, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

IULM is a small university with about 5.000 students, located in Milan and specialized in communication. It offers five undergraduate degree courses and five two-year graduate degree courses, besides numerous master’s degrees and specialized programmes delivered through its School of Communication. The University has been participating in the Erasmus Programme since its very beginning and currently sends abroad about one hundred students to European partner institutions and companies. Only students regularly enrolled in first and second cycle degree courses are eligible for the programme (3646 eligible students for the academic year 2014-2015). According to IULM University’s policies, ERASMUS mobility is essential for higher education and for professional and personal growth, in order to prepare students to the increasing geographical mobility of workers. The Institution commits itself to increase the participation in the Programme, promoting it through its institutional channels and offering a wide range of destinations. IULM’s participation in the ERASMUS+ Programme has the main objective of offering students, faculty and administrative staff the real opportunity to take a challenge on the international level, spending a period of study, internship or training abroad, with the economic support of the EU, if possible, and towards destinations characterized by high quality standards but also appreciated by the participants. During the years, therefore, partner universities and companies for traineeships have been selected on the basis of qualitative criteria (quality of the academic offer and of the activities carried out during the internships, care and timeliness in the administrative procedures) but keeping in due consideration also students’ and parents’ preferences. In order to inform potential students about the Erasmus Programme, IULM takes advantage of all the possible institutional channels (website, portals, social networks, notice boards, help desk), of the support of other departments that have a direct contact with the students and their families (Guidance Office), of the promotion of faculty staff during their lessons and of students’ associations, like ESN. Before, during and after the mobility period, outbound and inbound students are always supported in doing all the paperwork, in preparing learning or training agreements and in the recognition of study mobility (credit transfer) or traineeship abroad. During the academic year 2014/2015, IULM University had 102 participants overall, 92 of which for study mobility, 6 for traineeships, 3 for teaching staff and 1 for staff training, numbers that are adequate considering our potential students and our usual standards. The outcomes of outbound students’ reports and of the internal customer satisfaction surveys for 2014/2015 are definitely positive, both from the academic point of view (number of credits recognized per semester) and in terms of personal satisfaction towards the support they received during the mobility. The faculty and administrative staff involved in the mobility expressed an extremely favorable opinion as well, both for the experience and for the support they received. From the operational point of view, IULM commits itself to the improvement of internal procedures, to the implementation of new agreements with foreign universities, to a constant support to students, in order to make the participation in the programme more and more productive. Moreover, the International Office constantly informs the management and other university departments whose activities have some relevance with the Erasmus mobility in case of disparity with respect to European standards, suggesting adequate solutions. A long-term objective of IULM University is the internationalization of the academic offer, through a gradual activation of courses and modules held in English language; a particular attention will be paid to the quality of faculty staff mobility. Fully conscious that the participation in the Erasmus+ Programme and the quality of the partnerships contribute to the good reputation of the university among students and in the international academic arena, IULM considers the Programme one of its main priorities in the field of internationalization.
