Higher education student and staff mobility project
Start date: Jun 1, 2014, End date: Sep 30, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

The 2014/15 academic year was the 17th year in a row that the University of Miskolc took part in the Erasmus programme. This year a total of 116 students and staff members were awarded Erasmus mobility grants, the sum of the grants was close to ?145,000. Another ?38,200 was awarded to the University of Miskolc as an organisational support, bringing the Erasmus budget up to ?175,000 for the 2014/15 academic year. The mobility numbers were slightly below the target value of 136. The difference was caused by the insufficient number of student mobility for studies. While we achieved over the target mobility numbers in student traineeships, staff mobility for teaching and for training, the low level of mobility for studies overshadows the overall picture. We have analysed the situation, and we have identified two main areas that may help in boosting the student mobility numbers: 1) increasing the marketing and communication activity so that the Erasmus+ programme becomes even more visible; and 2) adjusting our internal procedures (e.g. in completing the Learning Agreements, and in the recognition of studies) in order to minimise the dropout of students who renounce their grants. Overall, the 2014/15 academic year has brought many positive changes to the Erasmus programme. A new Erasmus+ website was launched (available at http://erasmus.uni-miskolc.hu), increasing the visibility of the programme, and providing useful information for both incoming and outgoing Erasmus grantholders. We have prepared an Erasmus Booklet presenting all the foreign language courses and programmes of the University of Miskolc. The booklet was distributed among our partner universities, and it has helped in strengthening the ties with them (the number of incoming students has been on the rise and hopefully will reach a record high for the year 2015/16). It also helped us in recruiting new partners. An Erasmus+ Newsletter was launched, reporting about the most important Erasmus-related activities (calls, student programmes, new developments, statistics, interviews etc.). The newsletter has become a major dissemination method, not only reaching all the students and staff members of the university, but ? since it is available at the Erasmus website ? involving stakeholders outside of the university as well. Fliers, posters were also used to attract attention to the opportunities offered by Erasmus+. In collaboration with the Erasmus Student Network we organised trips for incoming students to nearby sites of important cultural and historical heritage (Eger, Tokaj region). Students were more involved in the popularisation of mobility for studies with the help of calls for student photo logs, reports (all materials received were uploaded to the new website). The Erasmus programme has also helped in creating a modern and innovative course structure at the University of Miskolc. New methods of teaching were first introduced in courses that were announced for Erasmus students (e.g. Business Games, Intercultural Management, Consumer Behaviour): students from different cultural backgrounds working in intercultural teams; project works; site visits etc. The courses developed for Erasmus students (and for those Hungarian students who wanted to attend classes in English) later on helped to attract foreign students coming to Hungary for the full duration of their studies (e.g. Stipendium Hungaricum students, students with Brazilian, Kazakhstani etc. intergovernmental scholarship, EGEC students). Erasmus+ continues to be one of the main facilitators of international networking, leading to relations that can be used to initiate international cooperation in research and development later on. These networks benefit not only the University of Miskolc, but also the city and the region. Finally, it can be concluded that the first Erasmus+ academic year was successful, despite the weaknesses and areas to be further improved. All the measures taken served the purpose of raising the quality of project implementation. Just to name a few of the results to be highlighted: a wide range of partners in terms of both geographical and scientific diversity (174 universities); topping the required numbers in outgoing SMP-STA-STT; new regulations and procedures introduced for greater transparency and for the standardized management of project issues; lessening the obstructive elements in the administrative processing of Erasmus documents; launching new information and dissemination channels (both internet-based and hard copy); a rich offer for course selection for incoming students, with the possibility of inter-faculty studies in an intercultural study environment; high level of programmes organised by an enthusiastic ESN mentor team; well-based partnerships suitable for cooperation in other projects too.
