Higher education student and staff mobility project
Start date: Jun 1, 2014, End date: May 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Context/background of the Project: In 2008 ZIBAT/EASJ was founded by law as a merger between nine other institutions. The merger was “implemented” in 2012 and in 2013 an Extended Erasmus Plus Charter was granted for 2014-2020. Approx. half of those institutions merged in 2008 had prior to 2012 been involved actively in internationalisation and/or Erasmus LLP programme. And only about 1/3 of the full range of educational programmes offered by ZIBAT/EASJ from 2012 were prior exposed to “internationalisation”. Taking above into consideration the application for the Erasmus Plus Charter awarded for 2014-2020 also was a welcome opportunity to “rethink” the institutional internationalisation strategy – also partly supported by Danish national policy launched in 2013 called “Øget indsigt gennem Globalt Udsyn”. ZIBAT welcomed the opportunity to develop an Internationalisation strategy where the vision of ZIBAT is to be an active institution and educationalist in a globalised world making the full use of challenges and opportunities of a global learning space and learning environment. On a more concrete level ZIBAT formulated aims for both student and staff mobility – both through EU and NON-EU partnerships as well as a global partner strategy and an internationalisation process aimed at internationalising all educational programmes and the creation of “mobility windows” within all existing curricula. Objectives: The objectives set for this project must be seen as a step-stone towards reaching our long term objectives. Besides concrete “numbers” set for mobilities we also have aimed to: - To ensure that all programmes offer a minimum partner coverage ensuring that all programmes/students can find a possibility for mobility within both EU and NON-EU (still ongoing) - To re-think the existing partner portfolio (were identified and joined for only a few programmes) and develop new partnerships which to a larger extent cover a more diversified programme mix and to a greater extent meet potential student demands - To increase number of outgoing mobilites (students) within Europe as well as NON EU– both in terms of studies as well as internships. - To create/stimulate a demand for outgoing mobility where the student demand is non-existing or very low Number and type/profile of participants: The total number of outgoing mobilities may seem “low” if evaluating the present project isolated (in total 46 outgoing students and 1 staff). Though - if we take into consideration the number of mobilities including our Non-EU partnerships we are satisfied. BUT our aim for mobilities within EU is to grow numbers both traditional studies as well as internships abroad. We can further see that our objective to increase partner coverage has developed positively. All ZIBAT programmes today has a “mobility window” and student from a much wider programme base go abroad. In other words – mobility is demanded from students who never had the possibility before. Description of undertaken activities: To reach our ambitious objectives set for 2020 (minimum 50% of graduates have been abroad) – ZIBAT implemented a new organisational setup in 2015. A Mobility office was setup centrally and to increase “student exposure” a new corps of International Mobility Ambassadors (7 persons representing 3 full time positions in total) were launched to be able to motivate and “work” students in general as well as increasing the quality of mobilities. The Ambassadors work decentrally and each semester starts with general informative meetings leading to individual consultations where the concrete mobility is developed in cooperation with the student and partner institutions. Results and impact attained: As mentioned it may seem unsatisfactory in terms of numbers realized during the project period 2014-16. But taking our starting point into consideration we actually find the results achieved satisfactory. We have been able to “move” a group of students who initially don’t demand for possibilities abroad. The characteristics of our student population are that they come from a lower socio-economic and non “migrant” background. Further, a large percentage are "older" students who re-school for various reasons. From an institutional point of view, we have achieved a satisfactory results especially if NON EU mobilities are included. Our Mobility Ambassadors in that respect represent a better and closer support to outgoing students as well as guidance during the application progress. We have facilitated the necessary adjustment of curricula to increase the number of educational programmes where mobility is a “real” possibility as well as adjusted to facilitate and incorporate internships abroad. We have strengthened the “Quality” of each mobility though our Mobility Ambassadors who follow each student closer towards course identification with partner institutions as well as the issue of recognition once the student is back from the mobility abroad.
