Higher education student and staff mobility project
Start date: Jun 1, 2014, End date: Sep 30, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

CONTEXT/BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT: The Scuola Superiore per Mediatori Linguistici di Pisa is a small-sized private HEI, which has 300 students enrolled. SSML provides translation and interpretation courses, representing one of the main examples for linguistic education at a bachelor's level. The Degree Course in Linguistic Mediation is based on the study of three foreign languages, among them are: English (compulsory), Spanish, German, French, Russian, Arab and Chinese. There is also practical training in linguistic labs (oral and written mediation) and the management of sectorial languages. The scholarships given out for other countries, which the languages are studied, is fundamental for the linguistic and cultural improvement of our students. SSML started its ERASMUS activities during A.Y. 2013-2014, settling an international agreement with the University of Rouen (France), the Sprachen & Dolmetscher Institut of Munich (Germany) and the University of Cordoba (Spain), which all include courses in translation and interpretation. The number of students who were granted a scholarship to study, increased from 6 in A.Y. 2013-2014 to 13 in A.Y. 2014-2015. During 2014-2015 SSML also offered a trainee scholarship to one of our graduated students. This means that during A.Y. 2014-2015 5,6% of students have had the chance to experience ERASMUS. OBJECTIVES The participation of SSML in ERASMUS+ project contributes to the internationalization of the academic system and the teaching methods as the results of the comparison between different study plans, the students and teachers involvement in a foreign culture and the improvement of linguistic skills. NUMBER/TYPE PROFILE OF PARTICIPANTS For A.Y. 2014-2015, SSML allocated 13 scholarships of study and 1 trainee scholarships, including economically disadvantaged students. Students who have been granted the scholarship, have mostly been women due to the fact that students enrolled at SSML are mostly women. All students experience their scholarship during the last year of the Degree Course and get the bachelor’s degree the same year. Ten out of thirteen students who experienced the scholarship program during 2014-2015, chose the language of the country of study as the language used in their thesis. The trainee scholarship, which was given during A.Y. 2014-2015 has given a student an opportunity to experience the growth in a professional setting, specifically in their field of interest (teaching of Italian language to foreigners). DESCRIPTION OF UNDERTAKEN ACTIVITIES The scholarships from 2013 to 2015 have involved students and teachers from SSML, as well as students and teachers from our partner universities abroad. The International Relations Office has extended its international agreements with the University of Malaga, Cardiff and Seville, which have graduate courses similar to those at SSML. With this method, the study plan includes the teaching of Italian. This way, the exams can be validated and credits can be given through ECTS. All students of the SSML have been informed through an informative meeting about the ERASMUS project. All students assigned scholarships have participated in an individual interview process and have been informed of the terms and conditions of the Accordo di Mobilità and the Learning Agreement, insurance policies provided by SSML and European medical insurance card, and contents of ERASMUS student card. RESULTS Every student which has participated in the scholarship program has expressed gratification and satisfaction in their experience abroad. They have all received credits granted from the University or the Institute abroad and they all received a bachelor’s degree for the current year. The exchange of professors from SSML and their partner institutions contributes to a diverse didactic method and the internationalization of SSML. The international relations started during A.A 2012-2013 are always more effective, considering our partner universities have welcomed more and more of our students. Moreover, SSML has started a collaboration for a scientific review with the University of Cordoba. The administrative staff is acquiring more experience in the management of the ERASMUS project and our aim is to keep improving the involvement of the administrative staff in the ERASMUS mobility.
