HeLa goes Europe
Start date: Jun 26, 2014, End date: Jun 25, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Background, context, objectives of the project “HeLa goes Europe”: Within the context of a more European profile of our school it was our objective to open up opportunities for our teaching staff to gather personal and authentic experiences in a European context. This was to support and to deepen their linguistic, intercultural and teaching abilities. Because of the existing and still expanding bilingual profile of our school we needed even more teachers who can function as multipliers and develop and improve CLIL teaching skills among our staff. It was also our objective to explore the possibilities of bilingual modules in French and Spanish. It is the general and overall aim of the project to prepare our students for an increasingly European job market and for international university studies, both linguistically and on an intercultural level. For this, we need linguistically competent teachers who are aware of the opportunities that Europe offers and who can activate a network of European partners when needed. Thus, getting into contact with teachers from other European countries was also one aim of the project. Number, profile of participants and activities: In the course of two years, from summer 2014 to summer 2016, six teachers from the language departments of our school (English, French, Spanish, Biligual Teaching) who were predestined by their teaching experiences and their subjects to work across departments and thus promote a development of our institution with respect to an even stronger European profile took part in courses taking place on Ireland (Dublin), Great Britain (Cheltenham, Edinburgh), France (Nice), Spain (Granada) and Belgium (Brussels). The courses dealt with CLIL methodology especially in the natural sciences, with literature, European identity, student-activating methodology and a variety of intercultural aspects. Results and effects: The participants evaluate their activities and experiences positively. All of the teachers report having had rewarding personal encounters and having made new and meaningful experiences. Some observe an increase of linguistic competence and a growth of teaching competences. The participants stress that they also gained new perspectives on national and European topics which have been brought about by talks and discussions with course leaders and teaching collegues during the course. An overall effect of the activities is an increased motivation to teach, the participants report feeling “inspired” after coming home. To include bilingual modules in Spanish and French (e.g. integrate Spanish texts in history lessons) is regarded as possible and will be closer examined. Long-term effects of the project: The participants´ motivation to share their experiences and knowledge within our school and beyond, e.g on nationwide teacher training courses on CLIL, is high. Of course, also the students of the participants benefit directly from the experiences and increased competences of their teachers whose lessons have become more varied, more authentic and more topical. Sharing the knowledge and the experiences gained during the project in conferences and workshops on “school development days” will definitely lead to changes in our school curriculum with regard to an increasingly European profile.
