Healthy Lifestyles in Urban Environments: Youth Grooves, Youth Moves!
Start date: Jun 2, 2014, End date: Feb 2, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

An increasing number of young people between 14 and 22, in urban environments, lead an unhealthy lifestyle. The problem is due to their daily activities becoming more and more digitalized and the interactions between peers increasingly virtualized, bringing higher exposure to and influence of advertising and mass media on eating habits and leisure choices. Youth living in an urban setting has little knowledge of the provenience of their food and the influence of the environment and seasons on nutrition. Moreover, the availability of fast-food and the lack of cooking classes leads to bad nutritional choices. Our association proposes to counteract these effects by encouraging 32 young people between 14 and 22 years old from urban environments to adopt healthy lifestyles. We wish to bring a holistic approach to this by touching upon 3 main objectives as follows: – encouraging the participation of 32 young people in at least y sports activities. Sport activities are essential to the harmonious development of the body, and transforming them into a daily or weekly habit will positively impact upon the group. – increasing the interest on healthy eating of 32 young people in at least y nutrition workshops. Knowing what and how to eat is essential to make the right choices in terms of a balanced diet. – encouragaing the participation of 32 young people in at least y activities on ecological transition. Being aware of the connection between the environment and one's body brings the necessary knowledge for improving health and leading a healthy lifestyle. The project Healthy Lifestyles in Urban Environments: Youth Grooves, Youth Moves! will take place in Caracal, Romania, between the 27th of October till the 3rd of November. This project will achieve its objectives by promoting activities in which teamwork, intercultural learning and responsibility are key values. The activities will tackle three main themes: nutrition, sports and ecological transition, including other sub-themes like: slow-food, healthy diets, urban gardening, dancing, urban sports and other physical activities, advertising, financial education, urban gardening, composting. There will be some theoretical workshops which will be carried using non-formal methods, and also practical activities like cooking sessions, sports., gardening. The program includes also a street action and an open meeting with different stakeholders like parents, school management, other organizations, fats-food owners, local farmers. The workshops will take place both indoors and outdoors, depending on the subject, also making sure that the activities take place, throughout the day, both inside and outside, as to promote healthy lifestyles and show that the learning process doesn’t necessarily have to happen only indoors, in the classroom. The street action is meant to help young people transmit the competences they have acquired, while the meeting with different stakeholders intends to start a first multilateral dialogue and cooperation, the young participants taking part in the discussion being encouraged to take an active leading role.
