Haynest®: Biodegradable 3D package material based on organic residues (HAYNEST)
Start date: Jan 1, 2013, End date: Dec 31, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

The main objective is to construct an installation for the production of 3 dimensional (3D) formed Haynest packaging parts.Haynest is a new 100% bio-based packaging material that can replace EPS (expanded polystyrene). Haynest consists of raw (unrefined) natural grass fibres and a bio-based binder bonded in an open matrix.Haynest is fully compostable and consists of materials that are not specifically grown or harvested for its production purposes, but in fact they are "surplus". A great feature of Haynest packaging is that both fibre and binder are not treaded by chemicals. According to research rapport contributed by the Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands, Haynest has a positive LCA (Life Cycle Analyses). It is easier degradable in comparison with paper pulp (so called moulded paper) or containers (egg cartons). Specifications of Haynest are following the European Standard flowchart BS EN 13432 in order to name the material a "compost". The university has further concluded that the impact of Haynest on environment is up to 90% lower than the impact of traditional packaging such as EPS.This packaging will degrade and help reduce the amount of waste. Haynest helps in the reduction of greenhouse and toxic gases released by the plastics and materials chemically treated. It results in optimum use of energy resources. Haynest® can prove to be a great option in the packaging technology.
