HABITAT: Life can be sustainable

We believe that, living in a world with limited natural resources it is crucial that youth reflects on how to limits our impact on the environment. Youth are often unaware of the responsibility they have toward the environment and of role they can play to protect it in their daily life. We wanted to support young people to have a first hand experience of how it is possible to live with a smaller impact on the environment respecting the soil, the water resources, bio-diversity and all form of living beings. For this reason InformaGiovani Italy, in partnership with ADEGUA Spain, Itineraire International PACA France, Dynamo International Belgium and Estyes Estonia, organized a youth exchange to give the possibility to 26 young participants to experience and to develop awareness about sustainability and environmental protection. We wanted to offer them a possibility to get more familiar with topics such as environmental protection and sustainability. In fact these concepts are a relevant part of the current political debates of European countries and these debates that will shape the future of young people. This youth exchange provided occasions for the young participants to share, reflect and discuss about the different cultural practices that are used in their countries to live with a minor impact on the environment. They had the opportunity to share these best practices and traditional practices as they are used in different countries. Participants were involved in practical workshops, visits and group discussions to explore the active role they can take to protect the environment in their daily life. They also were exposed to practices and knowledge that they can share amongst peers. We wanted to help the young people to become aware and to reflect upon the enornous potential that every single person has to protect our common natural heritage and resources. Working methodologies followed the principles of non-formal education: group discussions and plenaries, workshops, outdoor learning, learning by doing activities, peer to peer education, sharing of experiences and best practices, ice-breakers and team building games, participated evaluation etc. In brief the objectives of the proposed project were: Improve the participants’ understanding of sustainability, environmental protection and low impact living; Enhance the abilities of youth to reflect upon the impact they have on the environment they live in; Help youth participants to realize the role they can play to protect environment and promote a sustainable way of living; Expose youth to best practices of sustainability; Foster social inclusion and integration of youth with fewer opportunities; Enhance self-esteem and confidence of youth with fewer opportunities; Promote mobility opportunities within the frame of Erasmus +.
