Green Islands in the Baltic Sea (Green Islands)

The main goal of the project of Green Islands is to improve the environmental conditions in the Baltic region. The project aims at achieving ‘greener’ islands by mapping, analyzing and evaluating waste, energy and water management together with greenhouse gas footprint, and ecosystem services provided and utilised on islands in Sweden, Finland, and Estonia. The evaluation will be a platform to base environmental plans and potential future investments (realized outside of the project) in the areas on Islands are naturally limited areas where the idea of self sufficiency and sustainability are historical but a renewed implementation is direly needed. The environmental problems of the Baltic on the other hand concern all Baltic countries but many solutions need to be made locally. The archipelago islands can, if the right action plan is implemented, be a leading region when it comes to local solutions to Baltic-wide problems and set and example for a sustainable lifestyle. The project engages all levels of infrastructure and has geographical spread and heterogeneity in the types of islands involved. The variety of partners involved ensures the anchoring at grass root level while having a professional implementation. We are putting effort into feedback to the stakeholder groups via meetings, our homepage, and printed material. There will be seminars on targeted subjects open for all. Press releases and spreading the information to media through the official web site is also part of the project. The information will also be spread through media and websites from all participating partners. All mapping information will be publicly available via a web based GIS-portal. The portal provides analyses and suggestions for others interested in making their island green. Resulting environmental plans form the base for long term development and future investments, and a potential certification system. WP1 The overall project management, administration and coordination of steering group meetings. WP 2 spreading information to stakeholders and media, finding lecturers and coordinating the public seminars based on stakeholder interests, the development and maintaining of the homepage, making uniform layouts for all information material, and making a mobile exposition to visit all member areas. WP 3 the mapping of ecosystem services provided and utilised on the islands, and making the greenhouse gas footprint calculations per island, database management, and building the GIS-portal. WP4 mapping of waste, water and energy, developing methods and making relevant analyses. Each partner has a WP4 project leader and they work as a team. Consulting work for future investments and their financing (to be realized outside of the project) is included in WP4. National stakeholder meetings and seminars are organised in WP4. Achievements: The GREEN ISLANDS project promoted sustainable thinking and self-sufficient resource use and targets three main problem areas: nutrient runoff, energy consumption and production, as well as waste management on islands in Sweden, Finland, and Estonia. The project mapped, analysed and evaluated waste, energy and water management processes as well as the ecosystem services provided and utilised. Partners collected new local solutions for the sustainable Green Islands and made them available in a comprehensive format for everyone to access. Additionally, the islanders were also given opportunities to share their knowledge and experience in matters concerning waste, water and energy at meetings, training sessions and through web pages. The most significant outcome of the project was gathering, synthesising and disseminating previously scattered or missing information.
