GREEN ECONOMY AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT. A replicable laboratory to educate young people and reduce early school leaving.
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Aug 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

CONTEXT Our land and environment are often under attack by human-based factors like deforestation, air and soil pollution, landfills, fossil fuels extraction that cause natural disasters. We have to educate young generations to protect environment. School has to educate young people to respect the Earth emphasizing the importance of a sustainable economy. Accordingly to EUROPA 2020 strategy we want to make them aware that the environment can be a resource especially if supported by new technology addressed to the improvement of recycling and energy production. BACKGROUND Curricula and extracurricular activities are open to environmental problems and are focused on connected topics such as entrepreneurship and start-up enterprises joined to ICT. OBJECTIVES We want to increase the interest of students aged 15 - 18 years through the respect of the environment. We have noticed that the laboratory practices involve students greatly and reduce early school leaving. The learning by doing methodology can give us the chance to obtain four main goals at the same time: A - to increase students knowledge and skills C - to increase the attention toward environment B - to reduce early school leaving D - to increase students’ entrepreneurship they will guide us during the project development. NUMBER AND PROFILE OF PARTICIPANTS The working group will be composed by students aged 15 to 18 years . In each country minimum 30 students will be involved in the project. They will be guided at least by three teachers teaching science and biology or other scientific subjects. METHODOLOGY Since we have noticed that the laboratory practices increase student's interest and reduce early school leaving we will use the learning by doing methodology. ACTIVITIES During three years, the project will be focused on six, mainly based, workshop activities . Their result will be hosted on the Internet site of the project. The activities are described below: a - the first section will give students the possibility to express the beauty of their own country in order to understand that it has to be respected and preserved from pollution and deterioration. The section will contain a collection of clips to document our lands through: 1 - videos about the fauna 2 - audio clips about the sounds of nature 3 - photos of the flora b - The second section will contain the description and comparison of our typical food and traditional dishes to understand that differences come from different agricultural and climate conditions in each country. c – The third section will focus on monuments. It will be organised as a time line to understand how much it is important the conservation and the restoration. d - The fourth section will focus on how energy is produced . In Europe different attitudes exist among different countries. e - The fifth section will focus on recycling in order to make students aware that it is the easiest solution to the problem of landfills and even an income source. f – The sixth section will concern the economic opportunities of green economy and how Europe helps to start up enterprises. IMPACT AND RESULTS The researches carried out during the project will show students that knowledge can't be partitioned and subjects like mathematics, science and biology can be useful to rise awareness of our territories and can help to develop new ideas about sustainable entrepreneurship like stated in Europe 2020 strategy . Working in groups, even transnational, students will realise that communication is important and they will be motivated to study subjects like mother tongue and foreign languages. Once the knowledge of the students will be interconnected, their competences will grow giving to pupils a solid background useful to approach the labour market or the prosecution of their studies even at the university. RESULTS (tangible) - a site hosting all the produced material - a site ready to be used and filled by colleagues while repeating our experience - The technical and Didactical manuals of the experience on DVD - a DVD as a documentary of how the project phases have been developed LONGER TERM BENEFITS To ensure the project usability in other schools, the web site will be accompanied by two multimedia courses addressed to the needs of who wish to replicate the experience. They will be voted to: 1 - technical aspects to help teachers to set up the Internet site, to choose multimedia formats and needed hardware and so on 2 - didactic aspects to describe strategies to involve students, experiences that teachers could propose them with a particular attention to students’ early leaving school risk .
