Going Places with Languages in Europe

The target groups were teachers and trainers based within the upper secondary, apprenticeship, vocational and CLIL sectors and their learners. The resources focus on the development of transferable business skills which are useful for vocational learners involved in areas such as business, retail, travel and tourism and customer service. They prepare learners and trainees for the labour market by developing the necessary languages and vocational skills (via a virtual environment) to become competitive in the workplace.Learners follow a student on work experience as he carries out a number of activities such as booking accommodation, making travel arrangements, dealing with visitors to a company and directions and signs, and help solve the challenges. The resources are available in the target languages of French, German and Spanish. The project has impacted on teachers’/trainers’ methodological competences for teaching and engaging young people in languages in a vocational context to develop skills needed to enter the labour market. The transfer has supported VET systems in the partner countries and in the UK through the new learning resources created and the adaptations made. It has added value to practice through the better understanding of the methodology and provided a new dimension to the resource by mapping it to the CEFR with suitable guidance. It has provided the opportunity to utilise the resources for CLIL which supports issues at local and national levels within the partner countries. The resources have been adapted and modified based on the analysis and consideration of the local linguistic context, as well as the socio-cultural aspects in Poland, Romania and Germany and the English version has been simplified for use as a CLIL resource. The final product was available in DVD and USB format and a limited number were provided free of charge. The resources are now being commercialised. A range of supporting information, documents and additional activities were also created and these are available free of charge on the project website.
