"go for inclusion" Zwei polnische Freiwillige unterstützen den Frieden in Aachen
Start date: Jul 1, 2014, End date: Oct 31, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

Two volunteers from Poland spent 13 months in the city of Aachen. Aachen is a young student town, situated directly at the border to Belgium and the Netherlands with a long, thrilling history. The city has a lot to offer in terms of entertainment, leisure, cultural and sport activities. Aachen is well known as a European city in which the diversity of the population from numerous European countries left its mark. During the year of her learning service, one of the volunteers worked four days a week in a group house for adults and young adults with intellectual or physical disability. She supported the inhabitants of one of the group houses in their daily activities, sanitary care and free-time activities and accompanied them in their holidays when needed. She worked once a week in the local office of the international peace movement pax christi in Aachen. There she was involved in the organization and implementation of the following events : bestowal ceremony of th Aachen peace award, yearly remembrance event to the liberation of the concentration camp of Auschwitz in the city of Viersen (near Aachen), annual event of pax christi « Run for peace » and the yearly member assembly of pax christi. Thanks to her very good language skills she was able to collaborate actively in the volunteering department of pax christi. She was able to translate a lot of documents, write some texts and support the work in the field of the public relations. The second volunteer worked the whole week in one of the group houses for adults and young adults with intellectual or physical disability of the Vinzenz-Heim Aachen. There he supported the inhabitants in their daily activities and care at home and carried out leisure and outdoor activities with them as well. The most important one was the boat travel of one week in Holland. This activity cannot be realized without the support of the foreign volunteers. He was involved in the most important pax christi events as well, such as the member assembly where he supported the colleagues. This unique experience left its mark on the volunteer. It is always striking to see the personal development of the volunteers before and after the volunteering service. This also influence their (professional) future and career. The cooperation with foreign volunteers play a great part in the work of both working places and is highly enriching through the opening to new perspectives. It has influence on the daily work and on the colleagues as well.
