Get Up & Connect , empower deaf youth potential. EU-Ethiopia Deaf capacity building and youth exchange program
Start date: Jan 1, 2015, End date: Dec 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

This project is a two year collaborating project between four partners: Two from the Netherlands: Respo International and Hogeschool Utrecht, one from Norway: Ål Experiential College and Workshop Center for Deaf People and one from Ethiopia: Dires for Development. The focus is on empowerment and capacity building of the European and Ethiopian deaf youth (sector). This project aims to strengthen the cooperation and exchange between the deaf youth sector from Europe and from Ethiopia.By designing a training methodology and exchanging knowledge, skills and methodologies via three training activities on 1) sign language, 2) life skills, media and entrepreneurship, 3) training of trainers on these two topics, the capacity of 80 Ethiopian deaf youth workers, entrepreneurs and teachers will be improved. 20 Ethiopian deaf youth participants will be trained to offer training on life skills, media, entrepreneurship and sign language to deaf youth (workers) in Ethiopia. After the project period each of them will train at least fifty deaf youth and ten deaf youth workers from local, regional and national level.By organizing two international conferences in Ethiopia for more than 200 international guests the strategic cooperation between the deaf youth sector in Europe and public authorities in Ethiopia will be promoted. The issues of deaf youth in Ethiopia will be on the agenda and in the media. This will improve the awareness about deaf people in Ethiopia. Three sport events for disabled youth will enhance the cooperation between youth and it raises awareness for deaf people in Ethiopia. Two youth exchanges will accompany the capacity building activities. These exchanges will empower 20 deaf youth from Holland and Norway, change their attitude, inspire them to be more creative and feel more responsible for them self and other deaf people in the world. This project will foster the active participation of deaf youth in all countries. European deaf youth students get the assignment to develop their own training tools on sign language and leadership/media/entrepreneurship and exchange them with Ethiopian deaf buddies. This assignment will be a great learning experience for all beneficiaries. The results will be showed and relationships will be maintained via an online platform that will be designed for this project. This will foster the cooperation and peer-learning between all partners and will contribute to the project sustainability. In total this project will target 852 deaf youth from Norway, The Netherlands and Ethiopia directly.
