Several studies have shown that people with disabilities have a limited access to sport and health-enhancing physical activities. Studies also showed that another target group - women, are underrepresented in roles such as sports coaches, board members and other leading positions in sport. There is a need for strategic activities in order to use sport as a means to promote social inclusion for underprivileged target groups. The ESSSE is an intervention which aim to combine these two issues by developing sport events for people with disabilities where the target groups get involved and take up leading positions in the organizing of events.Project ESSSE includes international sport events in Sweden and national events all over Europe to educate and support participants of the mentioned target groups to be active and take up leading parts. ESSSE will include participants from 12 Programme Countries in Europe in order to give increased capacity to co-operate on a European level. The aims of the project are to support the objectives of European policies in the field of sport, increase the visibility and awareness of events aimed at promoting social inclusion for women and people with disabilities and to increase the access to sport for the target group. Furthermore, the project aims to increase European co-operation regarding those aspects in the European Disability Strategy 2010-2020 that concerns EU2020 and subjects regarding sport, social inclusion and disability. The project puts a focus on national differences in Europe regarding the rights for and inclusion of disabled persons and the aim is to identify successful “best practices” in certain countries that can be disseminated to other countries, especially in eastern Europe, as a tool to affect regional, national and European decision makers. With a strategic plan for dissemination and exploitation of results, the aim is to create sustainable results and added value at a European level.
