Start date: May 1, 2016, End date: Oct 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The place of women in society is seen in different ways from each country and culture, but it represents a sensitive topic for a lot of nations. Significant differences persist in the roles and status of women and men, influenced by patriarchal culture and traditions, from which all the partners have more or less a heavy legacy. These have created deeply rooted conservative societal expectations vis-a-vis women and men of which the situation will change if the mentalities evolve. The real challenge and aim of this project is not so much to make young people aware of existed gender inequalities, but analyze and discuss about them through the culture and history, to make youngsters understand why this unequal situation is not as acceptable as they might think. This work will be especially fruitful by the confrontation with other cultures from Europe, which will help to reflect and put things into perspectives from their own societal expectations. Indeed, it will increase young people awareness by making them reflect the strengths and weaknesses of their cultures on gender roles and gender equality, discuss and learn from each other’s history and cultural realities, in order to break stereotypes, in an inter-cultural perspective. Objectives: • To increase young people awareness and make them reflect about the roles and status of women and men• To make young people aware of gender balance situation in other countries • Discover new cultures and particularities of each other’s to break stereotypes as well as learning about themselves • Make the new generation open-minded and create potential future civic activists In order to address the objectives of the project, the youth exchange twill gather 27 young people, aged 18 to 30, from 5 countries in Armavir city in Armenia. The participants will staying together in one house, which will lead them to break stereotypes and build a better team. The planned dates for the project will be from 15 to 25 July 2016 (11 days, not including the travel days). The participants should be willing to open up to other cultures and different ways of thinking and living. They should be interested in reflecting themselves, and learning more about gender issues and interculturality. Moreover, to give the chance for everyone, at least one participant from each country should be with fewer opportunities.About the activities, we will follow strategic steps during the implementation, in order to get the most beneficial outcomes. First, we will stress out about the topic of culture and identity, to make them understand themselves and how others view the world in a different manners according to their culture. We will analyze then, the gender equality in cultural perspectives to make them to figure out the current situations about gender issues in their countries and the roots of it through the culture and history. Afterward, we will focus on the effects and the consequences of those inequalities. Employment and the place of women in the labor market will be particularly stressed out in this part, as well as stereotypes and discriminations of women and men suffering from gender roles. After the understanding process, the young people will have the opportunity to contribute actively and concretely. They will create a campaign for gender equality by making a cultural production: social advertisements, posters and photos. As working methods, we will use essentially non-formal and informal education with games, simulation, workshops, debate, outdoors activities, cultural production, meeting the community and making interviews and so on. As learning outcomes, the participants will gain tolerance capacities towards others regarding their cultures, way of thinking and living. They will also increase their cultural awareness and stereotypes will be broken. In this way, they will develop social and civic competences. About gender equality, the participants will gain knowledge on the existing issues and discriminations. Their attitudes and behavior will change about the socially constructed gender roles. With the production of campaign awareness, they will gain digital competences and practical skills like designer, organizational, working in a team, and so on. In a long-term perspective, this project will have a positive impact on the general open-mindedness of the participants and contribute to make the new-generation in favor of progressive ideas and even potential future gender activists. The project will have an impact on the organizations as well by creating new partnerships and strengthening the existed ones, by building trust and sharing success. Besides, we want to make waves with the project by affecting the communities. The exhibitions made by the youth will make people think and reflect on these issues, as a first step to make them accepting the progressive ideas.
