Ganymed goes Europe - Contemporary Performing Arts Meet Fine Art Heritage
Start date: Aug 1, 2012,

In 2010, the artist group “wenn es soweit ist” presented a new theatre format at the KHM - Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna/AT: each scene of the new format refers to and is performed in front of a specific painting in the permanent collection of the museum. In this new format, the reflections of a contemporary author writing about or in response to a specific painting are performed by professional actors, enabling visitors to see artworks in a completely new light. The spectator promenading through the museum as usual encounters different “stations”, each comprising an actor performing in front of the relevant artwork. Each scene is performed several times in the course of each evening event.“Ganymed boarding” was performed in Vienna 14 times, with over 7.500 paying visitors in total attending the performances. It received the important “Bank Austria Art Award” and was recently nominated for the Viennese theatre award “Nestroypreis”The vision of the project is to create an intercultural format that functions in different European settings. Therefore, the project will prepare and implement a total of 40 different new scenes and 24 evening events. A first serial of 7 events will be performed at the National Museum in Wrocław/PL, a second one (7 ev.) at the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest/HU. Based on the experiences from abroad, the project will create a re-launch and bring it back to Vienna as “Ganymed goes Europe”. All the evening events and especially the premiers will be strongly announced on the local and the national level. The project will find and disseminate practical criteria on how to employ the format in different institutional/technical structures. A forth museum partner, Brukenthal Museum in Sibiu/RO, will participate in the exchange of experience and the dissemination of the project results. The project will implement the international expert dissemination with the support of the world-wide network of ICOM - International Council of Museums.
