Gamification in Adult Education

AL-EF Consulting Ltd. is a private company operating in adult education since 2003. We are a registered adult education institute (registration number: 01-0840-06, registered in Budapest, Hungary). We keep professional courses in subjects, like - finance for non-finance officers; - project finance methodology; - financing small and medium sized companies - basic accounting for non-finance managers, etc. The main aim of our company is to keep courses which deliver the relevant, up-to-date professional knowledge on an enjoyable way and also provides practical tips and hints to use this knowledge in their everyday life making the courses live and multipurpose. In order to achieve our goals, we continuously seek for new methodology in adult education, how to improve our courses to meet the requirements of course participants of the 21st century. During our built-in (i.e. in the job) procedure of looking for new methods, we met gamification possibilities in adult education. We went deeper into this subject (through open courses organized by coursera.org - Gamification and iversity.com - The Future of Storytelling, books - The Gamification revolution, and internet research) and we realized that using gamification elements, tools in the courses, it may increase the fun level of the participants. If they have more fun, they are more motivated which increase the level of their engagement. This is why we would like to introduce our project: "Gamification in Adult Education". the project consists of two consecutive parts: A1) We would like to attend (one person, trainer) in the annual conference of ISAGA (International Simulation and Gaming Association) held in Dornbirn, Austria (Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences) between 7-11th July 2014. This Association is one of the oldest (established in 1970) association in charge of exchanging knowledge about serious games and simulations. By attending this conference, our goal is three-dimensional: - to collect the newest gaming methods used in adult education today; - to get experience how to build-in these methods into professional courses; - to make contacts with those foreign adult educator companies who actively use gamification methodology and achieve professional study tour possibility to get experience how these methods work in the frame of real courses. A2) Professional study tour in United Kingdom (1 person, professional trainer) getting experience how to create and keep courses using gamification methodology. We would like to get answers of the questions as follows: What are the effects on participants' motivation and engagement? What are the pros and contras of this methods in a course with a professional subject? What are the innovation possibilities designing new courses in our institute or together with our existing partners? and How can we cooperate together in the future on international level? The participant colleagues of this project have to have high level (written and spoken) of English knowledge, engagement in the project, relevant (more than 10 years) teaching experience in adult education and they have to meet the preparation requirements established by the managing director. We believe that the project will be successful and the gain will be the following: - we will build-in new methods into our existing courses making them more fun and achieving more motivated participants and even better satisfaction rate with our partners (in-house development); - we will share the knowledge among our local partners also engaged in the adult education (through a written briefing of the methods and adaptation possibilities, and presentation on professional meetings); - the HR colleagues with companies will be able to get a better understanding of these new methods (through meet-ups jointly organized by MotivArtis Kft.) and understanding of the positive effects of them, they will become more open to delegate employees to courses using gamification methods; - to continue and deepen the cooperation with international companies working in adult education.
