Future Approaches to Land Development (FARLAND)
Start date: Jun 30, 2005, End date: Dec 30, 2007 PROJECT  FINISHED

FARLAND aims to encourage a more innovative approach to land development. By anticipating the current and future needs of local and regional authorities, FARLAND wants to place at their disposal an approach that allows them to achieve multiple objectives when tackling issues of land development in agricultural areas, environmentally-sensitive zones and metropolitan landscapes. Achievements: Achievements so far The project 'Future Approaches to Land Development'(FARLAND) is a transnational network project. The FARLAND partnership consists of 7 policy related organisations and 4 research/knowledge related organisations from 7 countries across Europe. FARLAND contributes to the upgrading of instruments for integrated land development and stimulates exchange of knowledge and experience. Three main principles (more integration, more decentralization and more flexibility) direct the activities that are focused on different types of areas (agricultural areas, environmentally sensitive areas and metropolitan landscapes). The project has been approved on August 8th 2005 under Interreg IIIC West programme. The project has been running from July 2005 until December 2007. The core of the project is exchanging knowledge and experiences concerning land development between the partners. To establish this, study tours are organized to show the practice of land consolidation/land development in a specific region to the other partners. Besides, technical exchange visits (TEV) are held about specific topics related to land development to raise the knowledge of partners. The most recent TEV was about land consolidation strategies. These events led to lively discussions between the partners and more ideas to improve policy or instruments in some countries/regions. New ideas are included in the regional discussion papers that are written by the 7 FARLAND regions. Another output of the FARLAND project is the strategic vision. In the strategic paper for future approaches on land development a strategic vision on land develoment is presented based on the experiences of the FARLAND partners. The partners have a lot in common: similarities in problems and challenges for land development. With this strategic paper FARLAND wants to raise awareness and influence European policy makers positively. The project results have been shown and discussed in the FARLAND international conference on 21 and 22 November 2007 in Budapest. About 200 participants from about 25 countries, policy makers and experts, attended this international conference, including Ministers and State Secretaries. The results are also available in a book: FAR LAND NEAR FUTURE. More information about this project can be found on the website: www.farland.eu.
