The main objective of this project is to improve the regional competitiveness in both countries - Finland and Estonia. The result of networking between Estonia and Finland is araised interest towards small harbours, growth in new and more individual and special products. Also there will be available more high quality sustainable tourism products. Friendly Island Project (FIR) helps to enhance the travelling on the coast of smaller islands of Estonia and Finland. The current situation concerning the routes that exist will be analyzed during the project as well as proposals to improve the situation will be made in the conclusion. A new website for sailors will be made, that notes the importance of well calculated sailing routes. The entepreneurs and inhabitants of the islands will also take part of the co-operation by the chance to offer various serviceas and goods all year around.In the frame of the project one goal is also to work out specific services and souveniers as well as hiking routes that reflect the origin of the area and the history of Baltic Sea region. A legend based marketing strategy will be worked out for the period of 2009-2013. As a result it is expected to raise economic activity between co-operation partners. The three main themes of the project will be history, individuality, natural environment of the islands and services in the local harbours. The following will be carried out to deal with the main themes:The frame strategy of Gulf of Finalnd and development strategy for islands and harbours will be put tohether;Research on coast protection and preservation and cost benefit analyses on small harbours ;The conception of recreational activities on islands (public beaches, infrastructure etc.); Analyses on sailing regattas;Organising common events (2 conferences, 4 schoolings, 12 work group meetings);Creation of unite co-operation network;Creation of common marketing material and marketing strategy (television broadcasts, DVD-s, prints); A target group based market-research will be carried out;Small investments (information tables, information signs, waste management, WC, Wifi). Vision:To create a globally know, dynamic and competitive region, that attracts entrepreneurs and travelers and a place where people want to live, work and invest in. Areas of activities: safe and healthy environment;economically competitive and innovative region;attractive and dynamic communities Achievements: The FIR project enhanced the travel in the coastal areas and smaller islands of Estonia and Finland. By analysing the situation concerning existing routes, the project created proposals on how to improve the situation. The project created a market strategy for 2009-2013 and specific services, souvenirs as well as hiking routes that reflect the origin of the area and the history of the Baltic Sea region. The main themes of the project were history, individuality, the natural environment of the islands, and the services provided in the local harbours.
