PROJECT
FINISHED
As of September 2014 language learning becomes compulsory for all primary schools in England. We know that the new statutory status of languages in Primary schools will present some challenges for Hitherfield Primary school because we currently teach French informally and the delivery so far has not been formalized stringently. We now need to bring the quality of that teaching to a higher standard in order to deliver it formally, ensuring good progression from year group to year group. The French curriculum can only be successfully integrated into our school curriculum if all staff involved in leading and teaching the subject can acquire the relevant subject knowledge, competencies and first hand authentic experiences that will be invaluable in supporting us to get ourselves into a stronger position to teach French effectively. The objective is that all teachers participating in this project will acquire/improve their knowledge, skills and understanding of the French language as a whole. French articulation will be improved which will in turn improve confidence and effectiveness in delivering the French curriculum. All KS2 teachers need to be able to deliver French lessons and therefore they all need to have the knowledge, skills and confidence to do so. The individuals who will participate in the mobility experience must display an interest in the development of languages at Hitherfield Primary school, despite a lack in confidence when delivering French sessions. The participants' will have a clear idea of what they hope to achieve from the experience personally and what they will bring back and implement into their teaching practise. They will also have displayed a commitment to the teaching of French when non-statutory. There will be 25-30 participants (numbers cannot be exact as new staff may enter KS2 and be added, accompanying persons are excluded); these individuals will have more than one mobility experience as there are two separate activities. Participant’s training to develop their French will incorporate: speaking, knowledge and understanding of the French language via French language courses (A1). This activity will supply the structured teaching and learning required, from a professional organization able to formally and reliably assess competency levels. The second activity (A2) is based around our partner school. A school partnership provides scope for professional development through the strategic planning, organization and sustained commitment it demands. Additionally, it is also an excellent way of learning to communicate in a foreign language, enabling progression in language through a common purpose framed within a specific context to achieve a joint aim with a tangible end result. A natural exchange of professional practice will occur when participants from our school spend time at the partner school, seeing how they approach the teaching of language and how their school environment and perhaps also their city, impacts learning. The intention is for teachers from the partner school to come to Hitherfield too. The expected impacts are that language learning at Hitherfield Primary School will become successfully embedded in our weekly curriculum, that the teachers in KS2 will be motivated, equipped and more creative when it comes to delivering the French curriculum through their mobility experiences of language learning, collaboration and the sharing of their pedagogy with our partner school. The professional development of staff promises to be phenomenal, as through all their experiences a new dimension and logistical expertise which they would not necessarily have otherwise obtained will be added to their remit. The school partnership is intended to be a long running union, inevitably resulting in field trips lead by the staff taking pupils from Hitherfield to the partner school and vice versa. Moving the teaching of French from strength to strength by taking a new, free and creative approach to the context and delivery of the language is also a key result that we anticipate. The aim is, that at the end of the two years, teachers from within our cluster and outside of it, will be coming to our school to learn about teaching languages, because our approach will be cutting edge as it will encompass both creativity and an authentically French influence, evidenced by successful examples of joint projects that are varied, increasingly ambitious and unique. I also have plans for a themed French area (French Hub) in our school library. This will house resources that will include: books of varying levels, genre and interest, games, voice recording equipment (iPad or PC), puppets, CD Roms, DVDs. In addition to this, the children will also be able to interact with their partner school peers at prearranged, specified times. The success of this application will enable us to achieve our current goals leaving an impact that will last and a firm foundation to be built upon for years to come.
