Fortentwicklung des bilingualen Zweiges als Teil des Schulprofils
Start date: Jul 1, 2014, End date: Jun 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project`s overall aim was to improve and to extend the bilingual profile at the Sophie-Barat-Schule. Being an active member of the international Sacred Heart Network - thus working and believing in its educational and pedagogical tradition - communication and the learning of languages play an essential part at our school as well as at the Sacred Heart Community worldwide. Pupils experience communicative competence as a most inspiring means of exchanging ideas and values with like-minded students from all over the world. The History Summer School courses at University of Cambridge were exclusively held and delivered in English which helped the participant improve her own language competence. Functioning as a multiplier she has carried the course`s results into the school´s English department where they were discussed, adjusted and are about to be finally implemented into the present curriculum. Needless to say, this is a process which needs constant checking and readjusting over the years. The results will also be presented to other bilingual schools in Hamburg. So far it can clearly be seen that bilingual lessons not only highly motivate the students to expand their linguistic competence (thus improving their communicative skills) but they also encourage them to explore, question and to assess different cultural, political and social concepts and beliefs throughout the world. A broadened horizon and an eager interest in global affairs will undoubtedly follow. Ms Berkefeld, teacher of English, History and bilingual History at the Sophie-Barat-Schule, participated in the History Summer School at Cambridge University and is responsible for the whole process of implementing the course´s results back in Germany.
