Start date: Jun 1, 2016, End date: May 31, 2018 PROJECT  FINISHED

The program of language introduction on Åva gymnasium is in a process of change, some activity has been going on for six years, but the recent events in the world effects Täby kommun to expand its receiving of refugees. The program of language introduction has gone from 30 students two years ago to be expected to during the spring semester grow to about 200 students. Overall, these consist of students of unaccompanied refugee children, mainly from Afghanistan, Syria and Somalia.Through the training course Reading the City, we want to develop our knowledge of how we can support students to dare to take part of the city, so that they should feel secure and develop their language in the context of contacts with the city and its people. Last school year our students begun a collaboration with the department of utban planning at Täby kommun in the design of recreation areas, a partnership that creates the conditions for a genuine and authentic learning. We see opportunities to create conditions for the students to have a greater self-esteem when they enter the cooperation with Täby kommun. The students get the opportunitie to on their own use, take part in and dare to influence the society they live in. We want to encourage the students to build a cultural capital because we believe it is important to motivate students to empowerment, but also to concretize learning. The goal of our participation in training SMILE is that we educators in the future will be abel to be even better support to the students in shaping a strong identity - both Swedish and European whilst retaining their own. By appropriating the techniques that the planned training course offer we want to strengthen our ability to transfer the reference and codes of our common cultural heritage carries on to our students. At the same time, we need to use technology in our teaching, such as iPads and to use them in an educational way. By seeking the means to participate in the Reading the City and SMILE courses(www.eucourses.eu), we can develop the skills we need in this area aswell.
