Start date: Oct 8, 2016, End date: Feb 7, 2018 PROJECT  FINISHED

Ferreira Dias High School, in Agualva, is one of the High Schools in Agualva-Cacém, within Sintra county, a World Heritage Site, in the suburbs of Lisbon. Our formative offer covers different areas and curricula, aimed at students looking to continue their studies at a higher education or university level, and also at adults (mature students). Our school is also involved in teaching convicts at the prison facility in Carregueira.Agualva-Cacém is a city with about 60.000 inhabitants with a massive immigration rate of people from portuguese-speaking countries, as well as a significant influx of people from Eastern Europe. Therefore, a large proportion of our students comes from low income families with short academic background, which is further aggravated by the recent economic crisis. In an attempt to overcome such self-exclusion tendency, our school's motto is "To promote educational success in a high-quality school". It is the school's mission to promote skills that influence integrating changes facilitating an active citizenship in our society. The school is actively engaged in promoting the education of young and adult members of our local community, enabling their own personal and professional growth. The development of the project submitted herein aims to significantly contribute to the promotion of educational success. The implementation of novel approaches will motivate students and lead them towards scientific and cultural literacy, as well as developing a solid European citizenship awareness. By improving self-esteem, language skills, and promoting the use of new technologies, our students are better able to face the employment challenges and to integrate our community. At the same time, we also aim to promote the collaborative and cooperative way of working, and to further develop teachers’ professional skills, towards the modernization, innovation and internationalization of Ferreira Dias High School. Thus, by aligning the European Development Plan with our school's guidance documents (Educational Project, Annual Activities Plan and Improvement Plan), this project pursuits the following specific objectives:1)to improve professional skills, in order to respond to the students individual needs and to deal with social, cultural and linguistic diversity, thereby countering school failure; 2)to promote the use of novel teaching approaches;3)to improve management and directing bodies of the school; 4) to develop the international capacity and dimension of the school; and 5) to increase knowledge about other cultural and educational realities.Up to 22 teachers with different areas of expertise make up the project’s organising committee, as well as 2 of the school’s Board Members and the Head of the Teachers’ Training Centre. We strongly feel that the diverse capabilities of this team will contribute to the success and impact of this project not only for the school itself, but also for the students and all of its members. One of the first set of goals of the project aims at providing a selected group of the school’s teachers the opportunity to participate in training courses in any EU-member, concerning new educational techniques, new educational approaches and the link between the use of new technologies in class. The project’s committee will select applicant teachers based on their abilities to fulfil the goals of this project. The selected group will also be expected to disseminate the contents of these training opportunities to the teaching community in our school. In addition, all participants, namely the project’s committee and selected teachers, are expected to actively engage with the organisational process of the EU training opportunities, and should partake in any internal preparatory meetings leading up to the workshops or courses. Our team will commit to the organisation of regular meetings, seminars and workshops to help disseminate the outputs achieved with our project. When it comes to raising and educating individuals capable of responding to Europe’s ever increasing needs, awareness is key and efforts should not be spared. At the end of this project, not only all direct participants, but also the extended teaching community, will be better equipped to promote social cohesion, tolerance, human understanding and the feeling of belonging to a greater EU community, through innovative educational and teaching methods. Promoting activities as the ones envisioned by this project will have a great impact in the school as teachers with a broadened horizon towards Europe will be able to better gear their students with the right tools to meet all kinds of challenges. Understanding the need for a proactive and entrepreneurial attitude will help students towards a smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. In addition, the school will benefit from more-informed teachers and school-managers, as they will be better equipped to deal with any issues within the teaching community.
