Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The tourist sector has a huge importance for the economy of the Canary Islands. The weight of tourism on the regional GDP is considerable. The hotel and catering industry are key areas for the tourist sector as they provide support for its economic activity. Taking into account the different nationalities of our visitors, tourism sector requires a well-trained human resources, familiar with other cultures, intenationally skilled, and able to speak foreign languages such as English, German and French. HECANSA is a public company with two Hotel Schools which runs vocational training programs related to the hotel industry. Since the academic year 2013/2014, HECANSA runs its vocational training programs according to the dual system methodology. HECANSA has the intention of sending to Belgium three of its recent graduates (June 2016) for a working experience for 6 months within the framework of the Erasmus+ iniciative prior to joining the labour market in the Canaries. HECANSA has also the intention of sending to the BSZW, a vocational training institution in Osnabrück (Germany), to four of its teachers for a "job shadowing" for two weeks during the academic period 2015-2017. The aim of placements of its ex-alumni is to reinforce their professional and cultural skills to increase their chances after coming back to the Canaries of getting a job in the tourist sector. The aim of the "job shadowing" of 4 teachers in the BSZW is to get them familiar with the teaching methodology of the German institution and to explore, during their stay, new fields of collaboration with the BSZW. HECANSA expects from this action the following results: - To settle good links with academic institutions which run their academic programs according to the dual system - To observe the implementation of this methodology in Germany and to learn about the tools used for it - To identify a collaborative way to ease the transfer of credits for the Vocational Training Programs and during the learning process followed by students - To prepare the way for taking part in the next Erasmus + call for grants in 2016 in a KA2 project with other academic centers which run their vocational courses in accordance with the dual system methodology Due to the relationship of HECANSA with the Regional Ministry for the Education of the Canary Islands, HECANSA will inform the Regional Ministry representatives of this experience in case the Regional Ministry considers it relevant for the design of academic programs for the tourist sector of the Canary Islands.
