Food Politics in the European Union
Start date: Sep 1, 2015, End date: Aug 31, 2018 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project Food Politics in the European Union is a Jean Monnet Module in the form of a summer school that seeks to combine a thorough understanding of EU food politics by introducing students to problems and policies within this area through three interrelated activities: • A summer course (F2.1) consisting of intensive morning and afternoon seminars by specialists in the field provides up to date knowledge on the most pressing problems in food consumption and production and the most relevant EU policies as well as public policy theories that help them understand these. The seminars are highly interactive and combine a lecturing part with interactive elements such as group-exercises and role-play, all under the supervision of the academic convenor and (guest) lecturers. • Two distinct study visits (F2.4) help students see problems and policies in practice. o The first study visits brings them in touch with a distinct range of farmers that each assess and experience problems and EU policies in a specific way. o A second study visit brings the students to the EU institutions and stakeholders in Brussels and gets them to examine a relevant EU food politics topic such as regulating foodrisks, ensuring food safety and food security from the perspective of these different actors. • A dedicated website (F2.2) will be developed serve as the virtual course ‘hub’ and gradually developed into a key information resource on food politics in the EU, accessible to students, professionals, NGOs, policymakers and academics. The summerschool carries 3 ECTS credits and takes place within the framework of the Utrecht Summerschools, the largest summerschool program in Europe, under the auspices of Utrecht University. The language of instruction is English, allowing for an international group of participants and maximimizing the course accessability and visibility in the academic world and its potential impact on students coming from within and outside of the EU.
