Finding a positive atmosphere for learning and leadership
Start date: Jul 1, 2014, End date: Jun 30, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

We want to increase positive learning results and school motivation as well as staff's endurance at work. There are many social problems in our area and there are many special groups at our school, such as pupils with severe emotional problems. Our two main destinations are internationality and PRO-project (learning in a positive way in a group), in which we try to build a positive climate for learning. It's a process which helps us to develop a positive behaviour model for pupils and adults at school. You can both teach and learn to control your behaviour and emotions. We want to prevent behavioural problems and increase learning results and our well-being at work. Five teachers will participate in the project. A teacher will take part in the course "Action Methods Increasing Motivation in Learning Situations". She is the leader of the PRO-school project at our school. Another will take part in "One week course for teachers of art & design". Three teachers will have a teaching assignment in Germany. They will put the positive teaching method into practise. The German school Waldgrundschule has been our partner since 2010. We have done projects together, earlier about saving energy and nature conservation and later about learning about each other's countries and cities. The pupils exchange letters and e-mails and learn about life in Germany and Finland. This year we have done projects about positivity using E-twinning, without any funding. We will have a group from Germany here in Joensuu in May: 12 pupils and three teachers. We are going to visit them in the autumn with seven pupils. The courses will help our teachers to lead the PRO-School-project/teach arts and crafts. They will also learn new methods of increasing positivity in our staff and can thus train our staff in implementing new methods. We will all learn how to act at school and with parents. Visiting the German host school and teaching there will give the three teachers new ideas and choices in their teaching methods. The evaluation and assessment discussions with German colleagues will help them improve their teaching. They will learn a lot about internationality and new cultures. Teaching without using one's mother tongue is an educational challenge. We believe that implementing positive approaches in teaching will build up our confidence. This project would be a major factor in it. It would help us to cut down our work load with behavioral problems. It would increase internationality and help us to get more foreigh contacts and new co-operation possibililties.
