Financial Literacy for the Roma
Start date: Nov 1, 2012,

The main aim of the FINALLY project is to raise the level of financial literacy among Roma adults which will enable the specific target group to learn an ability that can benefit whole generations. The Roma constitute the largest ethnic minority in Europe (10-12 million), yet their situation is still characterized by discrimination, social and economic exclusion. Defined by poor financial situation, high illiteracy, low knowledge of how to manage the money, perform transactions, find reliable information and make long-term decisions, in times of economic crisis, the Roma minority faces even higher risks for poverty and unemployment. Thus, there is clearly a great need to implement financial education addressing the specific circumstances of this vulnerable group. The project FINALLY will therefore develop a tailor-made FINALLY Training Course and innovative learning/teaching tools entitled FINALLY Toolbox (seminar material, exercises, quizzes, team work games etc.) that will provide financial education of the specific group of Roma adults. All the outputs will take into account their specific socio-economic situation and cultural differences. They will be designed in such way that it will be possible to implement it in various ways either non-formal or informal in nature. The Guidelines for FINALLY Toolbox usage will provide directions and lesson plans for the teachers/trainers. Through specialized methods of learning, the project will directly focus on improving the accessibility of learning opportunities for Roma adults and stimulate demand for learning among the Roma community in general. Intergenerational learning is a core factor to successfully raise the level of literacy and by educating parents, the next generations of Roma will benefit. More lifelong learning opportunities in tailor-made training courses for Roma adults will result in more possibilities to provide sustainable, concrete and adequate skills for empowerment of each individual Roma.
