Fertilization effect of Aerosols on earth BIOmass (FABIO)
Start date: Jul 1, 2014, End date: Jun 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Atmospheric aerosols have an important role in the energy balance of earth system, yet not all their interactions have been fully studied, especially the aerosol fertilization effect on the terrestrial and marine ecosystems. This proposal is targeted to quantify the response of natural terrestrial and oceanic productivity to the atmospheric deposition of ammonium aerosol and iron-rich dust particles. It involves the coupling of a global chemistry-aerosol model within an Earth System Model that includes the carbon cycle in the terrestrial and marine reservoirs. In the proposed research, important knowledge will be transferred from the third country (China) to the host institution in France, including a new dataset of gaseous and aerosol species emissions, coupling of aerosol and vegetation models, and simulation of the fertilization effects of aerosols on marine and terrestrial ecosystems. This proposed research is expected to enhance the Earth System Modeling in the host institution and increase European competitiveness in climate change study. This research can lead to potential breakthroughs in our understanding of the influence of nitrogen and iron on carbon storage.
