EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATIONFORMAZIONE DEL PERSONALE PER UNA SCUOLA EUROPEA
Start date: Sep 1, 2016, End date: Aug 31, 2018 PROJECT  FINISHED

I.I.S. “E. Duni-C. Levi” is the oldest secondary school in the city of Matera. As an academic school, Its historical mission is to offer a qualified and prestigious education. More than 90% of its students continue their studies in Italian and foreign universities and post-secondary schools, therefore they need renewed and excellence training. The implementation of an international dimension is a priority for the school and the city. The school has developed a strong European and ICT dimension in the last ten years showing attention for the intercultural dialogue and awareness and implementing the use of English. The most relevant experiences refer to multi-awarded Comenius and eTwinning projects, PON, collaborations with the British Council, The American Consulate of Naples, (Fulbright programme), AFS and BEC, English language certifications for students.Matera’s nomination to European Capital of Culture 2019 is a challenge and an opportunity for the international growth of the school. From school year 2015-16 the Regional Authority of Basilicata has authorized the course “Liceo Cambridge International” IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education). This is the first step towards the national recognition as Liceo Scientifico Internazionale. This year the students of class ID Cambridge are taught the Cambridge IGCSE syllabi of Geography and Biology in English by mother tongue teachers in order to attain the IGCSE certifications in the next year. At the end of the course the students will obtain IGCSE certifications in at least five syllabi, therefore getting ready for further education abroad. However, at the moment the school staff needs an adequate training to support the school innovation process. This project is meant to offer them an effective training to respond to the described process with competence and professional spirit. Therefore here are the project’s objectives:• Boost the European dimension of the school, also by the use of ICT (PNSD)• Improve professional skills of the Principal’s staff, teachers and administration/technical staff• Refresh curricula and teaching methods• Strengthen the English language skills of teachers and administration/technical staff• Implement the Cambridge International school • Extend the use of the CLIL methodOn the basis of the training needs the following priorities have been identified:• English course for a group of n. 5 teachers at B1 level of the CEFR (Cambridge PET)• English course for a group of n. 5 teachers at B2 level of the CEFR (Cambridge FCE)• Training for the teacher with the role of digital facilitator (animatore digitale)• CLIL training for n. 6 teachers (n.3 in Humanities, n. 3 in Scientific subjects)• Training on Quality Management for the Principal staff • Business/ICT English course for n. 2 Administration/technical staff, in order to be able to face the administration/technical work of an international school. The Erasmus+ training project will be started in September 2015.The participants’ selection will be made considering the needs’ analysis, the staff résumé analysis, and their willingness to attend a training course abroad. The project staff means to carry out the training in the U.K., considering a contact started by our Principal with the CPD and Training Manager Mr Simon Lind, international manager of Cambridge International teachers’ training. Also the eTwinning channel will be used for the final selection of the training agencies, and other important European portals/agencies for adult education.Even though this training is not aimed at obtaining a language certification for the participants, courses will be organized according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), therefore using the B1 and B2 declination of “knowledge, skills, and existential competences”, adopting an action-oriented approach. At the end of the project, the following results are expected:n. 5 teachers trained at the B1 level of CEFR (Cambridge PET)n. 5 teachers trained at the B2 level of CEFR (Cambridge FCE)n. 6 teachers trained in the CLIL method (n. 3 in Humanities, n. 3 in Scientific subjects)Principal and n. 1 Principal staff trained in Quality Managementn. 1 teacher trained as “Digital Facilitator” (animatore digitale)n. 2 Administration/technical staff trained in Business/ICT EnglishIn this way the school will be readier to implement a Cambridge International course, CLIL classes, and, in general, more activities and projects in a European dimension. The project staff expects a strong impact on the School mission and vision, on curricular innovation, on the language and CLIL skills and on behaviours of teachers and students. In sum this project will boost the internationalization process our students and teachers are determined to work hard for.
