EVS in Villacidro: growing up together!
Start date: Oct 1, 2015, End date: Sep 30, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The Association NUR (coordinating body) with the City of Villacidro (hosting organization) and sending organizations Abertal (Spain), TE IS Foundation (Hungary), Terra Vera (Slovenia) and YUPI (Portugal), will host four volunteers (2 at a time) in Villacidro, 14,000 inhabitants, 50 km from Cagliari, in Sardinia. The project, divided into two activities of 9 months each implemented one after the other, and each addressed to two volunteers, is based on years of experience in welcoming EVS volunteers. Through EVS we'll realize an exchange between cultures where the main actors will be young foreign volunteers, local mentors and local beneficiaries involved by the activities that, in addition to bringing benefits and added value to the local social services, will make the international mobility of young people as accessible as possible to young Sardinians of a rural town, through the positive example and direct involvement in hosting their European peers. The comparison with the different cultures and backgrounds of foreign volunteers will be critical to innovate, improve and stimulate the provision of social services to the entire population of Villacidro, to the elderly as to the students or the unemployed youth. Activities will include: SERVICES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE. Each volunteer will be involved in the activities of the town's "Informagiovani" (youth information office) evaluating job opportunities for young people; providing information on study careers; on scholarships, specialization courses, volunteering and working abroad, etc. Volunteers will also make proposals on the basis of their interests and skills, in order to enrich the range of initiatives offered. Moreover, more specific intercultural activities will be organized in agreement with the local schools of Villacidro and addressed to older students. SERVICES FOR THE ELDERLY. Volunteers will support the staff of the home for the elderly and will be involved in the daily animation activities. Those who are interested will be able to work in different creative workshops and educational activities with smaller groups of elders. Sometimes ther will be the need to take care of more personal dimensions and then accompany an elder in a walk, talk or just listen... The service has already hosted EVS volunteers and considers it essential to bring new ideas. Will then be well received all proposals aimed at the old guests. Volunteers may also agree on other activities to be carried out on their own initiative, on a weekly or biweekly base, at the library or at the media center or in collaboration with the Municipal Music School. Volunteers will be involved in their project for about 30h per week with free weekends, unless previously agreed exceptions to be compensated in the following days. The volunteers will be accommodated in independent single rooms (with bathroom) in the residential facility that hosts the town seniors. The structure closes at 19.30, but the volunteers will have the option of not respecting this time limit. The hospitality of friends and relatives must be agreed with the management. The timing of meals is tentatively set for 12.00 for lunch and 19.00 for dinner, times that volunteers will be required to comply with, with exceptions to be agreed in advance. In the structure it is forbidden to smoke and drink alcohol. The rooms are independent with respect to the part used by the elderly, but it is required to comply with the basic rules of the house. Volunteers will be provided with two bicycles to get around town. The chosen working methods will build on an non formal approach to learning through the direct involvement of volunteers in concrete activities that stimulates the sense of responsibility and, at the same time, creativity and ability to propose and design further activities. Due attention will be given to building a relationship between the various partners (including volunteers) based on trust, mutual flexibility, shared objectives and shared scheduling of the activities in the frame of the general lines of the project. The project will allow volunteers to strengthen their key competencies, and in particular: # interpersonal, intercultural, social and civic ones by working closely with the population of Villacidro; # entrepreneurship and cultural expression thanks to the chance to propose and implement activities besides the ones proposed by the local staff. Moreover, our association, with a long experience in teaching Italian as a second language, will provide further language support in addition to that provided on-line by Erasmus+, to better promote the integration of the volunteers in the community and the achievement of high levels of language proficiency, certifiable through the CELI test, the officially recognized certificate of the knowledge of Italian. The facilitation of the process of socio-cultural inclusion will be based on meetings scheduled with a mutual agreement with mentors chosen among local youth.
