Европейски проект за подобряване качеството на преподаване
Start date: Dec 1, 2014, End date: Dec 1, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

Ivan Vazov Secondary School is a centre school in the municipality of Varshets. About 650 students from grade 1 to grade 12 attend it. It has 10 classes with intensive English learning after grade 7. About 50 per cent of our students are of Roma origin, which requires special approaches in their education and motivation. Among the main priorities of the school are improving the quality of education, more effective learning of foreign languages and enhancing the teachers’ qualification. Our aim is our teachers of English to attend a qualification course in the UK in order to gain knowledge on how to work more effectively in a multicultural environment and to use new technology in the educational process, and to share their new skills with the rest of the teachers. We have decided to use the organizational support offered for this project to buy a new multimedia and to create an English laboratory in the school. The aim of our teachers’ participation in the course is to make use of the transparency of the EU and the instruments for acknowledging and spreading good practices. Two of our most experienced English teachers will take part in the course. They are teachers who are interested in attending different courses and bringing innovative approaches in teaching the language. The knowledge they will gain there will be shared with the rest of our staff. Our school’s policy is to support the initiatives for career development which is eventually of great use for the students. That is why we are giving administrative and logistic support for this project by providing the necessary information and helping for its development. The main activity of this project is the attendance of a qualification course by two of our teachers. Prior to the course there is a month long preparation, during which our teachers will fill in a questionnaire to inform the tutors of their background and personal preferences and needs. During the preparation phase our colleagues will join an online workshop where they will be introduced to their fellow participants and tutors. The online workgroup will also become a resource bank as all course materials will be accessible there and it will be a place for participants to share their experiences during their experimental lessons which will bring theory to practice after the course. Different theories will be discussed during the course. It offers lots of practical creative activities, sessions on textbook use and material design, and on using online technology in class. Effective approaches for teaching in multicultural environment will be presented. The course will be interactive. Its atmosphere will be reflective and it will make teachers self-assess themselves and teachers who can assess themselves are among the most effective ones. The participants in the course will practice and develop their language skills. They will be presented with more effective approaches of teaching grammar and learning and using vocabulary. They will see how using stories and drama can enhance students’ confidence in using the language. The teaching institution will deliver the course and our colleagues will communicate actively with it via internet prior to the course, will attend it and will share their new skills with our colleagues after the course. The tutors are responsible for monitoring the normal development of the course, motivating our colleagues to participate actively in the qualification process and to share their ideas and ask questions. In order to follow their progress, the principal of our school will ask our teachers after their return from the course to show an Open lesson and to make a presentation about the course which will be uploaded on the school’s website. The mobility will have a positive influence on our colleagues’ personal and professional competences. They will visit new places, enhance their language skills and share ideas with teachers from different European countries. Their qualification will be useful for the school and the students too. The school will have two better qualified specialists. During the course they will pay special attention to the issues of teaching in a multicultural classes and using interactive computer technology in the classes of English. Our students will also be influenced by their teachers’ qualification. They will have two more confident and creative teachers who will know how to motivate them and will show them ideas how to remember new vocabulary more easily and to understand grammar in a fun way. The long term benefits of the project are that as a result the school will have an English language lab to be used by all the students. The new technologies will be used in teaching the language and as a result the attention of more students will be attracted. Making more Roma students literate will give them a chance to be more competitive on the job market and will reduce the level of youth unemployment which is among the priorities of the EU.
