The needs analysis of the project underlines the growing demand for metal construction in the Baltic States: the main prop for this industry is the creation of optimal facilities for the development of new technologies, but this is impossible without continuous improvement of the employees’ expertise. The key operation which increases the competitiveness of companies in the production of metal constructions is thermal welding and sawing. The growing need of highly qualified specialists in the Baltic States and for the EU and other markets is the main concern of this project, whose work plan foresees: 1) the definition of modules with basic and compensating principles: their structure is a four level program and prepare teaching and learning materials integrated with laboratorial experiences; 2) the integration of educational issues with expert practice; 3) the introduction of specific training modules for a different target group-students of vocational schools, colleges and universities-with the aim of giving a European level welding specialist certificate along with their graduation diploma; 4) the implementation of pilot training for selected specialist groups in each partner country with final training phases in advanced technological conditions; 5) the definition of criteria and methodologies for the phase of the results appraisal; 6) the preparation of a new programme for European specialists in non destructive control of welded joints. The partners have significant experience in the training and in certifying welding specialists and engineers, and are specifically concerned in establishing and harmonising the national standards in order to integrate the project results into the VET systems of the partner countries.
