European Security: Theories, Institutions, Issues
Start date: Sep 1, 2016, End date: Aug 31, 2019 PROJECT  FINISHED

This project aims to contribute to the institutionalisation of teaching and research on the European Union at Istanbul Kemerburgaz University (IKBU). It attempts to establish a core module titled "European Security: Theories, Institutions, Issues" available both in the undergraduate and graduate curricula of the B.A. and Integrated Master’s/PhD Programs of the Department of International Relations. Yet the module targets a larger group of students since it will be open to all departments of IKBU. Specifically, the module aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of recent issues, challenges and institutions of the post-Cold War European security order. The proposed module will be first course at this specific subject area at IKBU, which will enrol the first cohort of students in its Master’s/PhD Program in International Relations in September 2016. Even though Master’s level studies on the EU studies are available in various universities in Turkey, the security studies have been restricted to mainstream understandings of strategy, military and intelligence. Hence, the proposed module promises academic added value not only for IKBU, but also promotes teaching and research on European security in Turkey in general. The main beneficiaries will be university students and young practitioners pursuing undergraduate/postgraduate degree at IKBU. Teaching will involve lectures, seminars, in-class discussions and student presentations. The research outputs of this module will be a journal article by Alper Kaliber, research papers and an e-book consisting of the selected student papers. Teaching and mentoring will be delivered by a group of renowned scholars. Teaching will be enhanced by extracurricular activities including roundtable debates bringing together policy-makers and senior researchers to discuss the pressing issues of security in the EU and in Turkey and seminars on study/scholarship opportunities in Europe and career prospects for young graduates.
