European Network of Mining Regions (ENMR)
Start date: Jun 30, 2004, End date: Aug 30, 2006 PROJECT  FINISHED

The objective of the European Network of Mining Regions (ENMR) is to create a platform for mining regions on a European level driven by public organisations. The two year project involves twenty partners from ten EU Member States, including local and regional authorities, universities, research institutes, industry, NGOs, Union and development agencies from mineral and coal mining regions. The network aims to raise the regional awareness and the profile of being a mining region, to support the exchange of experience on regional and European policies, and to develop an innovative model for regional development. Achievements: After commencing operations 1 January 2005, the ENMR has run its programme for two-and-a-half years. During this time, the ENMR has conducted two General Assembly meetings (one kickoff and one concluding meeting), eight Steering Committee meetings, six Thematic Working Group meetings, and 48 regional meetings (four each in 12 regions). Also, the ENMR has conducted five European Workshops covering Industry Development, Environment, Socio-economics, Post-Mining Regeneration through Tourism, and the ENMR’s Roadmap workshop. 100s of people have participated in ENMR meetings, including the 18 partner organisations (16 partners during the extension period), 10 associated partners, local, regional and national authorities ranging from ministries, a former prime minister, various European Commission staff from several DG’s, members of the EESC and CoR, and members of European Parliament and members of industrial associations. The most important event so far has been the unveiling of the ENMR’s Roadmap for European Mining Regions document in Brussels, Belgium, 27 November, 2006. The Roadmap programme included presentations by a world-class expert in mining trends, a member of European Parliament, members from the EEOC and CoR and a staff member from DG Enterprise. During the fifth operational period (Jan-Jun, 2007) the ENMR has focused on development of a future platform that will allow the ENMR to carry efforts forward to further realise the recommended actions contained its roadmap. The ENMR has developed a unique approach to an application for the upcoming Interreg IVC funding programme due to open sometime in late 2007.
