European Network for Harmonisation of Training in Haematology

It is the ambition of H-Net to implement the strategies of the Life-longLearning Programme and arrive at a truly harmonized curriculum forEuropean haematologists, thus raising the competence levels ofhaematologists and, ultimately, improve patient care and public health. The network was established in the wake of the ECAH project (funded bythe EC: Leonardo Da Vinci) which developed a curriculum, the CVPassport, that is aimed to raise awareness in teachers and students alikeof what European and national haematological organisations consider tobe a well rounded post-graduate haematology education. However, current configurations of post-graduate education show a high degree ofdiversity with respect to length and content of general and specialisteducation and preliminary studies indicate a vast heterogeneity ofcompetence levels among haematologists across Europe.Based on the CV-Passport, H-Net will develop reliable and dynamic toolsto identify and measure hiatuses in haematological knowledge and skills, the results of which will be depicted in the European expression map forcompetence in haematology. This map serves to identify the educationalneeds that H-Net will to address by both adapting existing educationaltools and developing novel ones, such as the Master class inhaematology.Furthermore, individual haematologists will be incensed to ascertain theirpersonal competence gaps by way of a questionnaire embedded in theso called H-Net portfolio which will be available to haematologists online. The same Portfolio system will then, on the basis of the individualcompetence gap, search and recommend educational activities – both onand offline, and some of which are developed in the framework of H-Net– to attain the level of competence that the haematological communitydeems to be the standard.H-Net will promote and harmonise training at the pan-European level, providing for useful long-term tools for national and European educationand healthcare decision-makers. It will contribute to high-quality Life-longlearning in a knowledge based economy and it will contribute to ensureand promote high quality healthcare to patients throughout Europe.Thematic Domain / Topic: Haematology is the medical science that dealswith the blood, blood-forming organs and blood diseases. Research hasimproved understanding of blood diseases and has made availableeffective treatment to an increasing number of patients.
