CMAster will establish the first ever Masters Degree in Clinical Movement Analysis (CMA) anywhere in the world. CMA is an emerging discipline within rehabilitation and orthopaedic medicine using advanced equipment to measure how a patient moves. A clinical interpretation of this data is provided to clinicians to support decision making. Follow-up analyses can monitor progress and form a basis for evidence based practice. In this multi-disciplinary area staff requires a range of clinical and technical expertise. Introductory three day courses are available and well subscribed but there are no opportunities for further study or accreditation. The limited numbers employed in this emerging field make a Europe wide initiative essential. The greatest current training need is for staff already in post. Familiarisation visits will result in an Institutional Mapping Report detailing the context for course delivery within each institution and consultation with stakeholders will generate a Key Competencies Report. These documents will guide development of the Curriculum, Virtual Learning Environment and Student Support Services. There will be an Agreement between partners to align administrative, financial and academic systems. An e-learning module, work placed learning module and foreign work placement will be piloted and an Independent Evaluation of the overall project completed. An Implementation and Exploitation Plan will be agreed. The primary impact will be to fill the pressing need for formal training of staff in CMA. The project will lay a rigorous academic foundation for the field for the first time. The immediate aim is to cater for European needs but the blended learning course structure will scale easily too much wider markets. Strong partnerships with CMA services, professional and academic bodies and equipment manufacturers will provide a platform for Europe as the leading international driver of advances in CMA.
