European IntercultuRal Education towards a New Era of Understanding

The EIRENE project is a mobility project which foresees a Training Course for youth workers, youth leaders, youth advisors and project managers working in the field of youth.
After 70 years of relatively peaceful coexistence, the European societies has been tested by the recent economic crisis and have been pushed back bringing to the fore issues as political fragmentation, social conflict, discrimination and lack of tolerance towards the otherness. The number of demonstrations of violence, terrorism, and extremism and their constantly increasing supporters demonstrate an urgent need for intercultural dialogue and mediation.
The inspiration for the design and implementation of EIRENE (the Goddess of Peace in Greek mythology) comes from the firm belief that youth workers and other professionals working with youth play a tremendously important role, enabling young people to develop skills and competences, build positive relationships, increase their social participation and promote intercultural understanding.
The objectives of the EIRENE project are:
- Strengthening youth workers’ participatory attitude and key competences, while exploring intercultural relations and new socio-political perspectives;
- Promoting intercultural dialogue through non-formal education to the benefit of young people’s well-being and future mobility and career perspectives;
- Promoting of the culture of non-violence and constructive conflict resolution;
- Stimulating participants’ openness and, ultimately, youth work in the EU and the Balkans through capacity building in the field of mediation and communication.
The EIRENE project involves 19organisations from 12 Partner countries and 5 Western Balkans countries . The activity for meeting the above objectives is a Training Course about:
a) bringing together professionals in the field of youth from various cultural backgrounds and setting the right atmosphere for a creative intercultural exchange of opinions, views and experiences;
b) Introducing the approach of non-violence through theoretical and practical sessions;
c) Involving youth workers into the design and creation of a “Log-book”, promotion material reflecting the activities of the course and spreading further the results achieved and transforming the insights from a fragmented experience into a contribution towards the establishment of a fruitful intercultural dialogue in Europe;
d) Holding interactive workshops on peace building, mediation and communication which will eventually improve the soft skills of each participant and in extension the functioning of each respective partner.
It will involve 40 participants which will be selected by the partners, forming a gender balanced but culturally diverse group.
The contents of the Training Course follow a learning path from introduction (Days 1-2) , to discovery of a possible issue or problem (Days 2-3), to deeper understanding of its actual reasons for existence (Days 3-4), then formulation of problem through new points of view (Day 5) after a study visit to Libera, an organization that works for peacefulness and legality, then discovering possible scenarios for resolution through creativity (Day 6), decision making (Day 7) and opening the opportunities for multiplication of results and benefits (Day 8).
All the activities will be based on the principles of non-formal learning and will contribute in reaching the objectives of the course and the overall objectives of the project in a participatory and creative way.
The Training envisages learning outcomes on three complementary levels: 1) new knowledge, 2) development of soft and transversal skills, as problem solving, creative thinking and communication; and 3) adoption of cooperative and participatory attitudes.
The 19 participating organisations will benefit from the enhanced cooperation within the partnership. New project ideas will be created during the training which serve as basis for future development and strengthening of relations and cooperation.
As the EIRENE includes partners from both EU and non-EU countries, we aspire to create an impact on all levels, local, European and further, either by the coordinator of the project, by the partners or the partnership. The desired impact of the EIRENE project is dual: 1) multiplying the benefits of cooperation as a life-time attitude and 2) disseminating the opportunities for learning mobility and further education offered by the Erasmus+ programme. The active exchange of practices in the field of youth work by all partners can produce an impact through the strengthening of the international dimension of youth work and elevating it into a more structured European practice.
In line and in addition to the said above, all promotion materials either in soft or hard copy will bear the EU emblem, thus adding a symbolic impact to the outcomes of the project.
