European-focused Policy Analytics - EuroPOlA
Start date: Sep 1, 2016, End date: Aug 31, 2019 PROJECT  FINISHED

European-focused Policy Analytics – Euro.Pol.A. is a course on policy data analysis, focusing exclusively on EU policies. Our objective is to develop an EU-focused, introductory data analysis course that will serve the needs of current and prospective EU-focused policy [data] analysts. The aim is to showcase a policy data analysis education paradigm, for social scientists and policy analysts alike, that combines knowledge and skills in (a) policy discourse analysis, (b) quantitative data analysis methods, (c) data retrieval and processing skills, and (d) skills in the use of integrated analysis software to performing [a-c]. The historical, political, regional and economic specificities of the EU, in comparison to other economic and political powers, suggest that EU’s approach to policy making is more or less inimitable. Therefore it justifies the development of an EU-focused policy data analysis course, for instance in comparison to generalised data analysis, policy analysis, or high-level EU studies courses at any level. Given the wide range of EU policies, and in order to achieve focus and reasonable teaching depth, in EuoPolA we consider only the policy domains of: (1) “External relations and foreign affairs” and (2) “Regions and local development” as they are closer to the team’s experiences and academic and research expertise. However, we anticipate expanding to more EU policy domains, via networking and partnerships as the course gains momentum, presumably after the lifetime of the proposed project. We aim to deliver the EuroPolA module as: (1) a semester course for students in our university including ERASMUS visiting students, (2) an advanced seminar-workshop to reach audiences beyond our institution, students and professionals alike, and (3) an online course that will potentially reach a global audiences.
