Europe Regulates Robotics
Start date: Sep 1, 2015, End date: Aug 31, 2018 PROJECT  FINISHED

The proposed module addresses the topic of the regulation of robotic technologies in Europe and in light of European law. It identifies applicable EU regulations, discusses their effects on the development of a European market for robotics, and the effects of robotics on the European society, discussing necessary legal reform, at a national and European level. The methodology used is highly interdisciplinary, resting on European law, on ethics, engineering and economics, providing different angles and different methodological tools to the – graduate (postgraduate, master and phd) – students participating in the courses. The teaching activities include a summer school, repeated over the three-year period, and open to anyone coming from various fields (including law, political sciences, engineering, philosophy and economics) and two seminars primarily for students at the host institution. Such activities, disseminated through a website, videos, course materials, scientific articles, and a book ensure to produce long lasting results on the development and proliferation of other EU studies in this field. Moreover, they promise to bring and keep European research in the field of the regulation of robotics at the forefront internationally and potentially influence partner countries even in their policy decisions. While the summer school is primarily aimed at developing both methodological and analytical skills that could be used in the design of robots and in the counselling of robotic enterprises, the seminars aim at providing knowledge and interdisciplinary (law and philosophy, law and economics) approaches to conduct innovative academic research in the field. The outcome of this activity could be of great interest for European policy makers. Policy makers will be directly reached through the website, publications and the organization of an international conference that will furthermore shed light to the European approach and studies on the regulation of robotics.
