Project Background 2014 is the 100th anniversary of the World War. Augsburg, famous for the Peace of Augsburg, has a particular relation towards peacekeeping, there is even a unique public holiday in memory of the Peace of Augsburg. The City of Augsburg hosts regular events around the idea of peacekeeping, in recent time the project “City of Peace” gained particular recognition during the FIFA Female World Cup. The school’s project wants to carry the idea of peace further by dealing with the EU as a peacebuilding institution in a historic and multilingual context. Project aims Students are to see the EU as a peacebuilding institution which contributes towards the mutual understanding and appreciation of the diverse cultures. In addition to that students are to develop a consciousness for the precious character of an almost seven-decade-lasting period of peace. By dealing with diverse frameworks of European languages and cultures students are encouraged to develop an intercultural European consciousness. The student are to grasp the crucial importance of common European politics for their own lives. Students realize that the Federal Republic of Germany is embedded in a large number of European and international interconnections and understand the implications thereof. Bilingual activities are planned in accordance with the curriculum of the school. Number of participants There are three teachers coordinating the project, seven further teachers will participate with their classes of 20 to 27 students. Numbers for the second leg of the project cannot be specified yet. Description of activities In the first leg of the project seven teachers and eight classes deal with European institutions in accordance with the Curriculum of the school, each preparing different aspects of current European integration and presenting the results to each other. In the run-up to the European Election Markus Ferber, MEP will be round to the school to answer the question brought forward by the students participating in the first leg of the project. The school radio will record the session and make it available to other students. The second leg of the project is planned from September 2014 and will focus on the events around the outbreak of the World War. We are interested in working together with partners from other European countries to provide our students with multiple perspectives on the conflict. Envisaged activities include bilingual studying of e. g. war literature, letters from the front, propaganda, movies dealing with the conflict. The results of the project are to be presented in the framework of the school’s traditional “students’ activity day” before the Christmas Holiday. Project Methods and Procedures As far as possible within the school’s framework the classes involved are to work in small groups researching their respective question, if possible also in interaction with peers in another European country. Short description of desired results, impacts and long-term benefits The students will gain further insight in the importance of peace-keeping institutions to their lives. They are to develop a broadened European consciousness and learn to see cultural diversity as an enrichment.
