Europa in de klas
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Aug 31, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

In Flanders there is a major need for students in teacher training to strengthen their knowledge and skills as future teachers; teachers experience new challenges in their profession, e.g. less motivation of pupils to learn or the need to integrate e-learning tools in the curriculum; and teachers in technical education lack a proper didactic offer to work on Europe in the classroom. This project aims at providing (future) teachers with knowledge, skills and tools to teach about Europe. The main instrument to realise this objective is the website www.europaindeklas.be. It holds a database with the didactic offer on Europe education for schools in Flanders. The database will be transformed into a one-stop-shop for 'Europe' teaching in primary, secondary and higher education with 1. Didactic content; 2. DIY films on ‘how to teach about Europe’ in primary or secondary education (basic, advanced and expert level); 3. an overview of innovative, inspiring and activating methodologies and e-learning tools, that are relevant for Europe teaching; and 4. a learning network for teachers teaching Europe. The website will be the result of the interaction with (previous and future) participants of the teacher training events. The objective is also realized through 2 teacher training events, focusing on ‘training the trainer’. The workshops ‘Europa in de klas’ will empower 400 students in teacher training. The intensive teacher training course focuses on 4 aspects of teaching ‘Europe’. Participants receive a Jean Monnet certificate. Finally, the update of the educational game ‘Grens-weg’ for primary education contributes to the objective. This project also improves EU knowledge and civic skills of 250 pupils in technical education. Therefore, the project foresees a workshop on the future of the EU. This creates a supportive environment for teachers in Flanders to work on 'Europe' in the classroom, which also contributes to their professional development.
