"EUROPA - Begegnungen in Freundschaft und Frieden" -Leben des Europäischen Gedankens in der Ganztagsschule-
Start date: Jun 26, 2014, End date: Jun 25, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The Europe school, Christinaschule, in a rural area of NRW, is a primary school with ten classes, with two or three forms per grade. Each class has the name of a European Country and identify themselves with ‘their’ country. This is also the case in the All- Day school where special emphasis is put on this theme. Currently special attention is being dedicated to the past Century with its horrors in the first half and the encouraging development in the second half. Our focus is aimed at the future where all Europeans can live in peace with each other and play an active role in shaping the future of Europe. The England Group practises to a certain extent ‘all day life’ in English. Whenever possible, English is spoken, in the book corner there are a lot of English books. The room is decorated with English pictures and there is also an English styled fireplace. The children learn English customs and traditions and have letter contact to an English partner school. Similar to that is the Poland Group, although they only speak a few words and phrases such as numbers, colours and greetings. We are also planning to introduce a France Group and an Italy Group. It is necessary to have experience abroad in order to speak the language fluently and achieve knowledge of everyday life, to learn more about their history, the customs and the cultures of Poland and England and then to be able to share this knowledge with the children. Our colleagues and a voluntary employee would like to get appropriate experience in the schools abroad and work with children in Poland and England. A polish colleague would also like to make an appropriate experience in Germany. The aim of our project work is to train our colleagues and employees so that they will be able to educate the children in their groups to be active European citizens and to expand their European awareness and to motivate children to act in a democratic manner. This shall be achieved for example through the establishing of an All- Day school parliament. The guiding idea of our school is the sentence from Maupassant:’ it’s the lives we encounter, that make life worth living!’ These encounters can’t end at national borders and shouldn’t be limited to holiday acquaintances. The preservation and form of the European Community is the joint task of all Europeans. To fulfil this task we have to get to know each other and communicate with one another. This is the only way we can successfully create and achieve collective aims. The voluntary male employee organises study groups and project weeks at our school, whenever the theme is the history of Germany or Europe. He arranges simulation games with the topic ‘live democracy’, organises and accompanies trips to the town hall, the state parliament, even to European parliament in Brussels and more. In addition to that he plays a major role in the organisation of trips with children and families to our partner schools. Last year he was solely responsible for the theatre project ‘Europe - we’re on the right way!’ Our colleagues and employees shall participate in the lessons at the foreign schools and also communicate with the children, teachers and parents and having a motivating effect as an ‘ambassador for Europe’. In all participating schools there are mentors available, who plan the school day and other agenda with their visitors. They are also your first contact person on location in all situations. Before the first meeting the participants should contact their mentors per email or telephone. After their stay in the schools, participants report on their experiences and evaluate the project together with the school principle. We expect, that the quality of the language and the motivation of our pupils to live the European Idea will continue to grow and maintain a secure future due to the all-day groups and the morning lessons. We hope, that thank the meetings with European partners, the European concept at the Christina School can become even more implemented and that children, teachers and parents see themselves as active citizens in the European community.
