EU Regional and Urban Policy: fostering innovation in urban research and practice
Start date: Sep 1, 2015, End date: Aug 31, 2018 PROJECT  FINISHED

European Studies are “always ready there and still in formation” (Calhoun, 2003). This is even more true when considering the relationship between European Studies and EU studies, which is too often simplified (Rumford, 2009): studying Europe, does not necessary mean just to analyse the premises and outcomes of the European Union integration project. Actually, the specificity of the European condition is a significant field of research and investigation, also because of the peculiarity of the EU integration project, that plays a central role, not only in renovating and reproducing this peculiarity, but also in redefining both European studies and specific disciplinary fields. Nevertheless, in many academic contexts, this strong relationship is still far from being rooted in learning curricula. This is particularly true in the field of urban and regional studies and planning. Even if EU promoted policies have consistently transformed the landscape of public action in the urban and regional policies (Atkinson, 2007; 2013), Master and Bachelor programs are still far from proposing in an established way specific courses and modules dedicated to introduce students to the innovations introduced by the EU integration project. The project proposes a new teaching module at Master level able to advance and support critical, reflexive and active learning in the field. The course original programme is based on interactive teaching and learning activities: field trips, workshop activities, conference and meetings with relevant actors will in fact complement traditional lectures. The aim is twofold: to provide Master students with a more direct, operative and critical understanding of the role of EU promoted regional and urban policies in promoting innovation in theory and practices in the field of urban and regional planning; to establish a stable relationship between Eu studies and urban and planning studies.
