EU Development Policies and Global Governance
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Feb 28, 2018 PROJECT  FINISHED

The module, which mainly targets undergraduate students, but is also open to a limited number of Master students, aims at providing an EU perspective on the study of global governance and an introduction to major topics of international development under discussion within multilateral organizations through an innovative teaching approach. It adopts a “project method” teaching approach, combining a cooperative policy writing exercise and a simulation of a decision-making process within the EU. By the end of the course, students will present their policy reports in a seminar, which will also involve participation of NGOs. Finally, empirical data collected throughout the module will be used for research purposes and will lead to a book on EU development cooperation and global governance. The core objectives of this module are the following:- Helping students making connections between theories of international negotiations and the real-life policy-making processes. - Familiarizing students with the actual functioning of the EU and with the set of opportunities and constrains provided by international organizations to EU decision-makers. - Stimulating interest of the students on the role of the EU in global governance and promoting further research for their final thesis. - Making students able to understand the complexity of EU politics and global dynamics and carry out empirical research on these topics. - Preparing students to develop qualification for their future professional life, in the fields of policy-making, teaching and research. - Providing empirical data for research on the global implications of EU development policy.- Providing other lecturers with didactic material for policy writing and simulation exercises. The project will be evaluated through the following instruments:- Questionnaires submitted to participants; - Feedback provided by NGOs in the final seminar;- Comments to the research outputs presented in international conferences.
