EU-China Relations
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Aug 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project delivers a new, innovative module examining the political relationship between the European Union and the People's Republic of China. China is arguably the fastest rising power in the world, not only in terms of economic strength but political influence and military capacity. Consequently, China is increasingly important to global order and therefore a key interlocutor for the EU as it attempts to shape the international system in accordance with its values and ensure global peace and stability. The two have significant bilateral economic ties and thus there is a clear interdependent dimension to the relationship. Further, the two have reciprocally recognised each other as strategic partners. However, there are simultaneous challenges in the relationship, such as differing political, strategic and normative outlooks as well as differing approaches to issues such as development in Africa. Thus the complexity of the EU-China relationship presents important opportunities and challenges to the EU, especially whilst both are essentially still attempting to 'find their feet' in the international arena. While in the past decade the study of EU-China relations has expanded significantly in the literature, the same cannot be said with regard to development of courses on EU-China relations. Thus there is a clear gap that needs to be filled given the relationship’s importance. This will be achieved through establishing a module for university students to promote knowledge and understanding of EU-China relations. Associated research activities which complement the teaching activities will create a more immersive learning environment and simultaneously provide outreach opportunities to engage with wider sections of civil society that have an interest or stake in EU-China relations. This will be bolstered through the creation of open educational resources including a course-specific website and the recorded webinars which will be available to the wider public.
